Never Mind The Bollocks

For some reason I dug this up and have been listening to it over and over while I drive. I seem to appreciate more now than I did as a young wanna be punk growing up. I know it is known for helping change some music scenes but I think I have a whole new appreciation of it now. Pretty brave stuff they did back then.

Great stuff. I've listened to it reguarly for 35 years.

I think when I listen to it now , Steve Jones doesn't get the recognition he deserves.

A much better album than some give it credit for. It was more than just thrashing and wailing.

I'm a huge punk fan but this album does nothing for me. It tries too hard to offend (Belsen Was a Gas, Bodies) and yet still whining about not being accepted (EMI). The other major English punk acts of the time are far better, the Clash and the Buzzcocks particularly. and it stands as a monument to why American punk was so much better...
The 1970s CBGB NY scene was far more diverse - Television, Talking Heads, Blondie, and the Ramones all came out of the same scene. And 80s punk would just lap the British, especially in its adoption of the DIY ethic.
Basically, the Sex Pistols are a more commercially successful version of the New York Dolls. And both bands rightfully broke up as soon as the wrested control of the band from McLaren. It was a gimmick, and not a particularly good one.
Anarchy in the UK and God Save the Queen are great songs though.

I think of irony (intended or unintended)and petulance as being very punkish.

I wouldn't disagree, but they actually started gaining traction a little later than the Pistols.

True.
But I still liked Bollocks a lot. Sure McLaren was pulling the strings but the puppets were great performers, imo.

they had some real balls for doing that album.

What bothers me about EMI is that they are bitching about their record contract. Boo frickin hoo. American punks formed their own labels, pressed the records themselves, and distributed and marketed the records themselves. I'm sorry your corporate overlords didn't give you a big enough microphone. Go build your own.
To me, nothing is less punk rock than worrying about your record contract with one of the largest entertainment companies in the world.
To quote the Minutemen, "our band could be your life." Do it yourself. The Sex Pistols needed the corporate machinery behind them, which makes them no different than the arena rock bands they claimed to despise. The only difference between the Sex Pistols and Pink Floyd was how they were marketed.

Holidays in the Sun and Pretty Vacant are underrated IMFO

I'm going to agree with you. I much prefer the Clash. And although they might not all be in the same time period, bands like Television, The Wipers, Talking Heads, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Blondie, etc. are more appealing to me personally.
When I really want to get my punk fix I turn to the 80s (Black Flag, Minor Threat, Descendents, Minutemen, Husker Du, The Queers, Screeching Weasel, etc.)

Yeah, Pretty Vacant is a pretty great song, too.
I don't hate the Pistols, I just think they are wildly overrated. Especially among those who look at them as the defining band of punk rock, when they are one of the least "punk" bands of the scene. They were the New Kids on the Block of punk bands. Completely manipulated by their management, and like NKOTB, had some surprisingly good songs.

this is correct.

meh. they certainly weren't the most.

as if they were the first.

woah.
BTW, you cannot compare the US with England on this topic, it doesn't work. Two completely different animals.

I like it more today as a nostalgia piece. It really is a great album if you just take it for what it is.
As far as UK punk bands go, I think The Clash and The Damned are lightyears better. That takes nothing away from the Sex Pistols, who made a record that pushed a lot of boundaries and is still enjoyable 40 years later.

Was a big Sex Pistols fan. It's hard to believe they played in Baton Rouge.
One of my all-time favorite bands. Saw them in the Warehouse years ago.
