Just me but in terms of success I would place Herb Tyler before "Purple Drank." He may have only known 6 plays, but he sure knew how to run them, 26-5 as a starter before being hurt his Sr Year.....

Jamarcus Russell
From a pure objective, football standard - Russell is the best "passer"/"passing QB" in LSU history. Hodson's legacy is wrecked by his horrific 4th year. Jones is probably second, with Hodson a close third. Jones played in a 2 QB system in an era before wide open passing games even existed, particularly in college, in the SEC and under McClendon. But for passers, really those are the top 3. Davey is a favorite by a lot of people and may be the best "scrapper", warrior, "football player", or however you want to describe the intangibles he brought to the position - similar to Herb Tyler for the "running" QBs, or how Hester is viewed as a RB. The Matts won championships - Mauck was very inconsistent at times, particularly younger when he ran a bunch. He did have a great final year with almost 2900 yards off of 229 completions and 28 touchdowns. Flynn had a great year in 2007, but could never really get out of Jamarcus' giant shadow. Neither of them particularly great passers (but great game managers and we sure could have used either one over the past 4 seasons). Ditto for Risher, Guidry or Wickersham - all had their moments (Risher, particularly, is underrated, in my opinion), but none of those three were remotely as good as Hodson. Ensminger and Woodley made a great tandem, and Woodley briefly started in the NFL, but neither were particularly outstanding in retrospect.

Hodson had a very good Sr year, it is his Jr year that was bad. In his Jr year our wrs, rbs and tes dropped well over 70 pass that should have been caught. Go look at the famous LSU-Auburn game of 1988 to see just how many drops in 1 game, Fuller dropped near 5 alone, before the TD catch. And Hodson's Jr season was so bad he lead us to a SEC championship in an off year. Games...com...pases..precent...yards..TDs..int Jr 11 154 293 52.6 2074 13 12 Sr. 11 183 317 57.7 2655 22 12 Best all around QB in LSU history is down to 3 players: Bert Jones Tommy Hodson Jamarcus Russell But Doc Fenton had the better season than any of those 3, and his Jr year was very good for that time. Doc only played 3 years at LSU 1907 at TE, 1908-9 at QB. So over Jamarcus Russell has the edge over Hodson with Bert in 3rd. Also of the 4 Doc Fenton would have won the Heisman had it been award at the time he played, his 1908 isn't overshadowed even by Cannon's 1959 season.

I would think the best qb's would have to have a ring just like they measure NFL qb's, so in my life time it would be m mauck and m flynn

Herb finishes a close second to Rohan as my favorites to watch, with JRock 3rd. There really is very little as fun to watch as Herb running the option with the wealth of RB talent he was able to play with. I know that NCAA '13 commercial had LSU with RGIII, but I'm certain we win the championship with Herb Tyler last year.

My father says The Ruston Rifle, Bert Jones. However, in my lifetime, I'd say I felt the most comfortable with Matt Flynn. My personal favorite was Herb Tyler though.

Yep, and technically didn't even get that bc he got hit out of bounds against tenn in the SECCG. I was there dude caught him with a cheap shot and some nobody came in and lit it up.

Jason white or troy smith. Their poor play helped LSU win NC's in 03 and 07.

For me, Bert Jones. He was poorly used and Mclendon had a terrible habit of splitting QB time. In today's game he would've been the best LSU QB!.....OOPS, I see someone beat me to the post. Ruston Rifle!!!!

Bert Jones was the best one I actually saw. I really thought Perrilloux could have been the next truly great one, that knucklehead.

Huh? It was Todd Boeckman who played in that game. I don't think TS ever touched foot on the field.
