Funk is better, but there are some great disco cuts. The production on a lot of disco was phenemonal . Horns, synths,harmonized vocals, sick bass lines. Good stuff.
The genres were also heavily influenced by each other.

I liken it to punk and new wave. Funk and soul kind of beget disco. There's a lot of crap in disco just like any other genre, ut some really good stuff too.

That's pretty typical of any genre. You start out with something great and it slowly gets "softened" up or designed to appeal to a larger audience and eventually you get crap.
Look at Heavy Metal; You start with this raw sound that at first no one wants to sign but then someone notices its really popular with certain kids. The next wave we have LA glam scene, still heavy, but appealing to to a wider audience. Next everyone does a power balland and we end with crap like Warrant.
Grunge kind of the same. We start with Nirvana, Pearl Jam etc. Next we get Candlebox and last Creed and Nickleback.

The time frame for this depends on the uniqueness of the genre. No genre is completely independent; all share characteristics with other genres. But some are more distinct than others. Hip hop was a very unique genre. And it got better and better for about 20 years before it started to get a bit watered down.
Similarly, EDM is a pretty unique genre. It is more difficult to trace back it's beginning as it all sorta started underground, but I first remember hearing it in the late 90s, and I personally feel like it is still improving.

From a musical standpoint the rhythms, riffs, and bass lines were very similar.
From a cultural standpoint the two scenes certainly overlapped.

I would consider disco the loser against just about any genre but rap. But that's just my opinion.

The quality of disco varies greatly. The good songs are really good. The bad songs are really bad.

It is hard to classify late 60s/early 70s James Brown into one genre. I guess soul/funk is the easiest way to do it.
