I own one complete AR and two that are not but are in various stages of complete.

I own them because they are a lot of fun to shoot and the second amendment tells me I can.

I also will use it for hunting pigs, coyotes, etc

If things get really bad it could also be used for personal defense.

Reminds me of that guy's basement full of weapons in Tremors (Burt I think was the character's name).

some people just think they're fun as hell (this would be my stance)

That's what I was thinking. As I said, I never fired one but I'm sure it fun as hell.

Big difference between automatic weapons, and what the media(and New York/California/Chicago/DC) considers an "assault weapon". I own one because I can. The one thing the media will never say is that it is possible to hunt with an AR/AK type weapons. Some people actually do this.

Well you know what I mean. Automatic weapons. Heavy stuff like that.

What you see sold in stores is not automatic guns. They are semiauto and shoot one bullet everytime you pull the trigger. Full auto guns are very expensive, very regulated, 6 month wait and have only had 2 instances of their use in a crime in the last 75 years...

The point of the 2nd amendment was so that we, as civilians, can protect ourselves from a tyrannical government. We should be allowed the same weapons as the cops, if not the military.

Try defending yourself against the cops with a 6 shooter.

Mainly automatic weapons because I understand people owning a handgun for protection or a shotgun/rifle for hunting/protection. I just wanted to know if there were any other reasons besides collecting them as to why someone would buy an automatic weapon. I never fired an automatic weapon but I imagine it is really awesome.

You clarified your question by acknowledging that you are referring to semi-auto weapons and not automatic so with that being said I will ask a follow up question.

Going back to my original question, why are you asking specifically about these "assault weapons"?

Are you fine with guns that may fall into your definition but can/are used in hunting?

What about semi-auto shotguns or shotguns in general?

What about semi-auto pistols?

Is your car auto or manual? Does it have the ability to exceed the speed limit?

Exactly, why don't people that use their car strictly for transportation drive anything other than one of these.

Yep.

Why do you need an auto transmission, AC, power windows/locks etc?

I think most civilians own assault rifles because simply they are a blast to shoot. I also like that in the back of my mind I have a reasonable means of defending myself should something crazy happen. I don't hunt with mine simply because I have rifles better suited to what ever I am hunting.

What I hate most about the media portrayal of assault rifles is how they grossly overestimate the danger of the weapons. They are designed to ASSAULT, they put a lot of suppression firepower downrange and are a great wounding round. They aren't the best round for taking a life. Using the T-town shooting as an example, if that psycho had opened up on a bar with shotgun with 8 rounds of buckshot, the damage and potential loss of life would have been much greater.

The only answer necessary, and it's the reason the overwhelming majority of people own them.

I suppose some folks just aren't fans of civil liberties.

He probably thinks that you also have to register your guns and transfer title upon privately selling.

Not a fan, but much less of an issue IMO than banning something for some sympathetic, symbolic overreaction to tragedy that makes little sense.

I doubt you can understand the answer if you have to ask the question.

"Assault weapon" is a term used by liberals. A gun is a gun. Just because my AR15 looks bad arse doesn't mean it is any more or less capable of killing a person than my .22 rifle. In case you didn't know, they shoot almost the same projectile.
