Now that my spring/summer tomatoes are officially DONE for the season (I have never had luck with fall tomatoes)…I have a question….I have a “garden space” in my backyard that I only use for tomatoes (typically holds 8 plants)…that is all I do throughout the year. That area sits dormant the rest of the year .I was wanting to try some new things to keep something in the garden year round.

I want to know what would be good to plant this time of year? (if anything)…should I wait till Sept.? Any advice on a fall/winter vegetable garden would be appreciated!

It gets pretty tough during the extreme heat of the year. I have a good book (Month to Month Gardening in Louisiana by Dan Gill) that gives you a breakdown for each month. Off the top of my head, I think you can plant turnips year-round.

I rotate tomatoes in spring, zinnias after tomatoes (wife likes cut flowers), then brussel sprouts or collards or broccoli in fall. Just pulled tomatoes and planted zinnias and they've already sprouted. They take summer heat well.

Strawberry plants that are designed for Louisiana weather, plant them late September, and collect some straw from a friends pine trees for mulch.

Hey Zap, I was thinking about planting asparagus but a friend said they can be complicated. Ever tried it?

Yea, Planted some this spring but didn't do proper bed prep which is crucial. They never came up. I have some I planted from seed a few weeks ago and I'm going to do good prep for them this time. I'm going to plant when I plant my fall tomatoes. They are perennial so come back every year. So plant them in a place where they can stay. Takes 2 years to get asparagus to eat.
