all these posts and everyone is assuming she will be able to pick up an auto pistol and work a slide, clear malfunctions, etc etc??

My vote is for a .38 revolver, preferably a Smith and Wesson or Ruger.

They are just suggestions, but at the end of the day, she will need to rent different styles of pistols/revolvers to see what fits her the best. I don't think working the slide on a .380 would be all that difficult.

Is a slide hard to work??

Gmrkr5 you hit the nail on the head. Pull it out point and pull the trigger. You dont have to worry about jams, mags or the safety.
