Heading to Cabo for a week in August and want to charter a boat for a day. How should the fishing be early august? How much would an all day or half day charter run? Any recommendations of a good captaion would be much appreciated.

Fising should be good to great with lots of dorado and a good shot at sails, blue and striped marlin. Also a good chance at yf tunas.

I use redrumcabo.com. They have a link to daily fishing reports as well as pics of the boats with prices.

Whatever you do, just dont show up and book with any random guys hanging around the marina the day before you want to fish. Book before hand with a reputable company. There are plenty people there looking to rip you off.

We booked with Redrum the boat crew fished hard, we had a couple of marlin in the baits but didn't hook up. We also caught one chick dolphin. We were one of the last boats into the dock and many others boats were flying multiple flags at the dock. Just bad luck on the catching, but it was nothing the boat did. I would book with them again...

The last couple times I went I went with a random guy at the dock. It worked out well for us luckily, but I was a poor college student at the time so we were willing to gamble. First time we pulled in a 99" 110lb stripped marlin and the next time we pulled in 3 about that size. If you go with the random guy only give them like $10 or you'll never see him again.

Edit: Those look like really good prices for charters from Redrum, it is very different from around here though because you need 1/3 the gas you use here. I'm going back in February and can't wait!

We always do a trip Sat-Weds (right before Thanksgiving) We always fish on the Cabo 35 sportfishers

We always use (Like Motorboat said- Picante) LINK

We stay LINK- They will cook the fish that you have caught.

Here are 2 pics from 2 years ago.

edited to fix link

Picante is nicest in town but a little pricey.

I've fished with Minerva's outfit twice. Last trip was 2 for 3 on sails, 2 huge dorado and a missed stripped marlin.

Also check out Wesley Brough - Cabo Surf Casters on FaceBook or google him. He was recommended to me from Minerva's shop. I went surf fishing with him and caught a 50lb rooster off the beach. One of the most fun trips I've done.

Any thoughts on doing a half day vs. full day charter? Can you get out far enough on a half day to strike anything big?

Both times was a half day charter. Usually fish close enough to get to the fish. Ask around before you book. They are usually honest about how far out the fishing is.

Actually looking at the redrum prices full day is only a little more cost wise than the half day, going that route and making the gf sit on the boat all day.

If you are interested in sharing the charter with another couple, let them know. You might be able to reduce the cost that way. FYI- We were told that fish could be shipped back to the states...

We were able to do this as well. We also bought a few coolers there and brought some back with us. Good rule of thumb...if you are under the allowed weight of a typical bag you will not have to pay anything in Customs.

A few guys from our group have also had mounts made - but they had measurements to the inch...with pictures and a place in Miami created the mounts without the actual fish.
