Found this legless fella right off the back yard. Probably about as round as a tennis ball at his thickest point (which ran the majority of his length). Snake was a good 5 ft long and was real laid back. He let me pick him up with the hard iron rake I had in my hand. His head didn't appear to be real diamond shaped or anything but he had a super flat top to his head. the tail end of this snake was in a shallow swamp that is just out of sight in these pictures....so it would appear he was coming from the water?

Did I let a piosonous one escape a should of been death or did I let one of the good guy go?

Sorry the pictures are sideways...took them with my phone and not sure how to make them upright in the posting.

hummm....I would have figured someone could tell me within a page or so

I figured the 1st few would be GDCK and black mamba but figured someone that actually knew snakes would want to show off their snake ID'ing skills.

he had the look of a killer but was cool and calm as could be. Most poisonous snakes I encountered back in the days of working on the rice farms in Louisiana were pretty dang agressive and would strike out when you touched them with something. I was kinda waiting for this snake to do that and if he would have I would have probably smoked his arse but he was so cool and collective that I just let him ride.

Hard to see his head, but I think that is a bad guy. Should have lowered the boom.

The best way to tell if they are harmless is to let them bite you. You will know real quick and with certainty if they are harmless or not.

Note: There is a possibility that this technique would only be good for one use...

A buddy of mine and I were removing his duck blind a while back and part of it collapsed in the water. We got what part of it that we could get out of the water and used his john boat to drag it to shore. Part of his blind tore and a nest of cottonmouths spilled out. I will never forget what one looks like.

This is what I do 99% of the time regardless if I think it is dangerous or not. For whatever reason, I didnt this time...

Not that our dogs or kids ever run around back there with us being out there with them but we have 2 weiner dogs and 2 2 year old kids...so I normally just smoke every snake I see. Which unfortunatly a lot more than I would like to encounter. Most or blackrunners though.
