Well, you are supposed to have two pets active so you can switch when one dies. But most people don't even pay close enough attention to realize their pet is dead.

Quite awesome. Maybe, I know their are dance emotes.
But like later emotes in GW1, some will be behind an earning system.

is it worth getting the deluxe edition for those perks that come with it?

I purchased the collector's edition (don't ask why) and played 1 beta weekend.
I thought I would enjoy it since GW held my attention for so long. Problem might be, just don't feel like starting another MMO. Only thing bringing me to this game is the separated PvP. Arena PvP is all I really do.

If you just want to play the game: No. They offer no statistical advantage whatsoever.
If you really like Guild Wars, miniatures, and all that stuff: Yes.
The Hall of Monuments Points are more valuable.

Game is open for play for a few hours. They are usually doing heavy work, so it's a bit unstable.

I think we'll have some people who are heavy into PvP. I also hesitate to say that GW2 will require you to raid at all, and that it takes large doses of time.

I know that open world PvP will be affected by gear but not arena. Is this correct?

Correct. But there will be ways to get gear in Open PvP, or WvWvW.

They are working on it.
It's a stress test, it's not for play. I promise, when it's up and running the game is smooth. They are probably testing a load issue.
