is any one else hoping the hornets sign him? he can play the 5 and plays good defense
Posted on 7/1/12 at 6:08 pm to fightingtigers98
I'd love to have him. We need solid defense from the 5 and basically a guy that we can 'rent' until next year.

I wouldn't mind signing him, but I don't think he'd be a long term option as a starting center.

he is the center i want us to sign. Not Asik (8million) not McGee (12 million.)
He is competent around the goal (148-223 for 66% in the Restriced Area the past two years), he can catch passes (you'd be surprised at how many big men can't.)
He's a hacker. He will use his 6 fouls in his 25 minutes a game, but I like him still.
TigerInATL has pointed out many times the connection between Mahinmi and Demps. I hope that familiarity brings Mahinmi to NOLA.
I'm hoping he can be our Rasho Nesterovic/Fabricio Oberto

I kind of want him just so we don't have a bunch of white guys and the Mexican surrounding Davis

Mahinimi is going to be in the Asik range. 8 teams have already contacted him.
If we want a cheap center, look at Haseem Thabeet.

I want him somebody like him 4 6 mil

He'll get closer to what Asik got. Like I said in the Asik thread, centers are the most over paid players in the league. $8 mil average a year isn't a bad deal if you think he can start for your team. I haven't watched Mahinimi enough to say if I think he's good enough to start or not, but if Dell thinks he can, than I'm cool with a contract similar to Asik's.

I think it is smart to let Jason bulk up and play 5 this year and then go after a 5 next year when players are cheaper because of the tax.

I don't think so. Asik was an RFA so you had to offer him something Chicago wouldn't match. Mahinmi is a UFA so he should get market price. Mahinmi doesn't project to have a huge upside, I'm not even sure he's a starter, so if proven but not great guys like Dalembert and Brown got $7 million last season I don't think Mahinmi gets even that. I'm guessing he'll be in the $3 - $5 million range.

Mahinmi won't get what Asik got.

i was guessing the 4-6 range. But I haven't been following it too closely and was just going to trust GynoSandberg on it. 8million seemed way too high for Mahinmi.
Hibbert, Lopez, Kaman, McGee, Hawes, Asik and probably even Camby then Mahinmi in terms of most coveted on the market. That is a lot of guys to be behind.
Plus Mahinmi is an UFA.

i think he'll get closer to 8 than 3

Id imagine the 7 teams interested in him will drive up the price. They say he has a top 3 already. I think he gets $5+

I hadn't gotten to follow him this weekend. Are we one of the teams mentioned?

They don't mention any teams, though Dallas is said to not be in the running

The only concern about mahinmi is his size, his is 6'11 230 lbs, maybe he can get a little meat on him. He doesn't seem big enough but at the same time i would not mind having him start for a year, draft a big, and then have ian as a backup to that draftee.

So who are the actual good bigs in the West (guys with real size who have offensive game)?
P. Gasol (7'0; 250 lbs) *getting old
M. Gasol (7'1; 265 lbs)
Bynum (7'0; 285 lbs)
Gortat (6'11; 240 lbs)
Cousins (6'11; 270 lbs)
Duncan (6'11; 255 lbs) *old
?
I would say Bynum, Cousins, and M. Gasol are the three main guys to look to have someone to defend them in the future.
