Handling sadness through music

Music is a very big part of my life, when I go through rough times, I always find strength in my favorite artists. Most of the music I listen to does involve handling pain and other serious issues anyways.
So I was just curious, when you are sad/depressed do you prefer happy and light music to lift you up or dark and deep music to let you know someone has been in your situation before?
and I know tl;dr

Blind Melon, the best of both worlds. You can hear a happy melody with some of the most heart-wrenching lyrics ever put on paper. No Rain is the epitome of it.

I prefer music that fits my mood rather than using music to change it

I have a theory about the pussification of America that ties in with this. Imagine feeling really depressed or upset about something, then turning to Justin Bieber as an outlet. No wonder "kids these days"are more emotionally fragile.

Same for me. It helps me deal so much better.

Very good point. I find that it's almost a fake sense of acceptance when you deal with things in that manner.

Yeah. I feel sorry for my generation. Luckily, my dad made a point to impart his music knowledge to me, and now I'm able to find more on my own based on that foundation.

I prefer my music to be in the same mood I am in. An upbeat song can't make me happy when I'm sad

Sad stuff can reinforce sadness however, and I avoid it when I am down.

Yeah, I haven't yet figured out if I'm just listening to dark music because it's just what I like anyways, or if it is truly comforting

it depends on what sort of sadness or funk i'm in. when it's that breakup kinda sadness (or something of the sort) where you know you're gonna be in it for a while, then i go with the blues. and typically that kinda helps bring me out a little faster.
when it's like pissed off or something, i go with something more upbeat to bring me out of it. i guess it's all about mood.
