The 2011 offense relied heavily on this play. My understanding is that this play was, and might still be, called so often is that it basically guarantees positive yardage, however slight.

It seems like even when the defense knows it's coming, they can't afford to sacrifice more bodies on the perimeter to stuff the middle, because the zone blocking scheme allows the hole to form based on where the defense is and is not when the running back hits the line of scrimmage.

My question to you all is whether you foresee us relying on this play once again in 2012. IMO, Mett's passing ability will call for more true handoffs in that it will sell play action, whereas a quick toss does not.

Are you referring to the dive that instead of being handed off is tossed?

I thought they called it in short yardage because it basically allowed the QB to do a quick 180 after the pitch and "occupy" backside pursuit.

I always thought this was strange about the play. QB12 or 9 would pitch and then bow up to the defensive end, but never actually block. I guess just the sight of a potential blocker makes a defensive player change his course or something.

Play is bad arse on the high school level. I coach HS football part time and we took this play straight out of LSU's playbook. 10+ yards most of the time. I know its different on the college level but just wanted to share my CSB

To answer your question, yes I do see LSU running it next year as well. It works well with a bruising RB like Ware. We still ran it last year with Lee.

It was a good play for us. You can still go playaction off of it. My biggest issue with our running game was the lack of push we got up front. A lot of times the holes weren't there when we needed it the most.

My question: are our OL bunched too close together? Do we need bigger splits?

Did we ever go play action off of it last year? I just can't recall.

That would require us to pass.

It's a damn good play, and I've not seen anyone use their QB to block the backside like Jefferson did.

Mett's arm might be a little to valuable to expose to a defender ...

Should have done this on 1/9; maybe even a halfback pitch BACK to the QB for a flea-flicker type pass.......

you could also put Hilliard at full back and ware, blue, ford etc at HB and fake the pitch and give to the full back on a full back counter

Imagine the effectiveness when we can accurately throw the WR screen.
