i dont see how anyone who as in the SS that day missed it, unless they werent there yet
the crowd went nuts when that guy stole the sign
it really set the atmoshere for the whole night

that guy was a campus legend, i remember him being in the reveille holding up a piece of the sign

That was the first game I had ever attended. I was a senior in highschool. I stayed with some firends in that dump called Kirby Smith. I dont rememebr the sign, but I remember the goal post making its way to the top of the stadium. Good thing the cops got there, it was definitely about to be tossed out the stadium.

I am honored to E-know the hero of this story

Awesome they had to jump the fence to walk over- they started by holding it up in the visitor section.

I was about 5-10 rows down from your student section re-entry-

What you might have missed is the fact that these two guys thought they were going to walk into the SS and get it back. They got about 4 ft from the section and realized we messed up, and immediately headed for the cop. It is was kind of like the bikers in a Bronx Tale after Sonny locked the bar doors and said we ask you to leave- now you can't leave.

If I remember correctly, the assault on our sacred space began maybe 40-50 minutes before kickoff. The stadium was probably only 15-20% full and the student section was nicely filled-in. The general admission section maybe 75-80% full, and the fraternity/sorority section only 25-30%. ESPN GameDay was at the P-MAC so I'm sure lots of folks went in at least a few minutes later than usual.

The fragment I was given is in a memories-drawer at my Mom's in Baton Rouge, along with a few copies of the story they did about me in the Daily Reveille. Maybe I should snap a photo of the item next time I'm home and post it on here.

for reference, here's a couple screen-shots from the 1999 alabama at Florida game:

I was there. The sign actually read "Slap em Silly Spurrier". And the LSU student that ripped the sign from them had his hair dyed green. F'ing awesome moment!

JP, I remember watching these guys come all the way around from the visitors section... there wasn't anyone there, or in NE stadium. I remember wondering how the hell those guys were in the stadium so early, as they made the trek around the East side.

I do remember you moving pretty damn quick up and around on the bleachers... I give you my thanks, made a great memory for me. You are a true Tiger fan!

I was there, my room mate sold his tickets and before the game joked that he would kill himself if LSU actually won. lol. I've never seen Tiger Stadium go that crazy over a win after the clock ran out.

Oh wow, you remember my green hair from fifteen years ago?? It was an accident, actually. I had some purple spray-on hair-paint and some yellow as well. I think the prior home-game I had used the purple and it worked fine.

For the UF game, I went with yellow, but the combination of my dark brown hair and the yellow paint, somehow resulted in green.

For a brief period, I feared that the narrative would become "did you see that crazy Tulane fan that protected the LSU Student Section at the Florida game?"

Hell yes I remember! We had many toasts in honor of the "green-haired guy" after that game. Set the tone for the atmosphere of that historic night. You should never have to buy another drink in BR!

I remember it the same way. For the most part, the stadium was completely empty ~5% aside from the student section that was around ~75% full already.

thelawnwranglers, that's very kind, but completely unnecessary. The student-section ovation was far more than repayment enough!!

However, this Sunday I will be at Silas Condict County Park in Kinnelon, NJ (less than 10 miles west of Oakland, NJ) if ya wanna grab a quick drink.

I was there in the student section and I remember this vaguely. However, I do remember the goal post coming down and hitting some students, It just missed me. Best game ever in TS... IMO.
