Where those "legs" would have met up with some bad arse paratroopers. I guess my dad would have been moving to hill 30 about this time. Anyone who jumped into or hit the beaches during Overlord had some massive brass balls.

Those dudes were real heroes. I can't imagine all the emotions going through their minds when they stormed that beach. Most people will never have to face a fear that intense in their lifetime.

The first ones are Omaha, shots of pillboxes and the cemetary and looking out on the beach from inside of some of the pillboxes. The next ones are Point du hock *sp, and looking onto the other beaches, over the remains of German guns. The craters are from the bombing before the mission on the Point. Most are around 35 feet deep. Sorry for the huge size, I was too lazy to go in and edit each one size wise.

My dad went in behind enemy lines at 5 AM (3rd wave) as the pilot of a glider with 82nd airborne on board. He showed me a nice picture of him and another officer and the guys, all in front of his glider. He got the distinguished flying medal for that one. wowser. He volunteered for the Army Air Corps, 1936. Was also involved in flying daylight bombing missions over Italy, where he was wounded by flak on his 26th mission. He made the point of telling me he was told he would be able to go back to London after the 25th mission. Catch-22, book by Heller, captures this Italian day bombing mission well.

Teddy - you ought to seek out WWII groups on-line - there may be an "Anzio" group out there that may have some info on your grand dad - never know. I'd hurry, that generation is fast leaving us.
Ya, I'm on it. Got a few emails and research requests out. He never spoke much about the war, hardly at all. Hence the predicament I'm in with his Separation paperwork and the archive fire in the 1970s. When Saving Private Ryan came out I asked if he had any interest in seeing it. He simply said "No" and I remember it as the only thing he ever said to me in a curt manner. He carried the bullet wounds in the form of distinct purple blemishes on his arms. He died back in 1999 at 82 years old.

I've only known one German, and the Nazi topic was extremely taboo. D-Day was never brought up, but you do NOT talk about Hitler or make jokes about it.

I'm sure it is. They have a required class in high school that is all about Hitler and what happened. I bet it makes them feel like shite.

My Uncle was not at D-Day, but he was with Merrill's Merauders during the China/Burma/India campaign. Although I always knew him as the kindest, most gentle and funniest man I knew, he was apparently a badass while in the unit, he bacame battalion sargeant major and everyone knew he could kick their butt if required. He was a great man and I miss him. One D-Day related story, there was an older guy who used to eat at a restraunt in Metairie where we would go. I think his name was Marvin. Anyway Marvin was proud of his service during the war and would hand out copies of the orders of the day on D-Day. He was a Higgins boat driver and the Higgins boat on display at the WWII museum is a replica of his craft. He would go tell people about the day when the museum first opened. Sadly, he too is gone.

The last time I visited the WW2 museum, we were behind a man and his daughter and they were obviously speaking German. I'd given anything to know what they were saying.
