Not a fan of teams extending players in the middle of ONE good year. Granted he was/is an elite prospect.

This makes the Pirates extension of McCutchen to 6 years and 51.5 million look fanfrickingtastic

Not Pac-Man.
A running joke between my friends is to always refer to him as an 80s video game other than Pac-Man.
Adam "Galaga" Jones...

There's a huge difference between the two deals. First of all, Andrew McCutchen hadn't even hit his arbitration years yet when he signed his deal. Jones is a year away from free agency. Second, Jones is a 26 year old CF in his prime with unbelievable potential. Tremendous power, very good speed, decent defense, and there's no reason to believe he's not going to get any better. If you look at Jones numbers and compare them to Torii Hunter's numbers through his age 27 season, they're virtually identical. OPS is virtually the same (Hunter had a .771 OPS compared to Jones .772), number of stolen bases, Wins above replacement, runs scored, stolen bases, they're all virtually the same. I don't think many people would have raised a stink if Hunter was given a 6 year, $84 million contract after the 2003 season and Jones is at a similar point in his career.

To be fair to the Mariners, Adam Jones was the only player worth noting that was traded away by the Mariners. I mean George Sherrill had one decent year as a closer but he really didn't make much of a difference for the Orioles. Tillman's a AAAA pitcher (and nowadays he's not even a good AAA pitcher), and Mickolio and Butler are both not even in the organization anymore. If the Mariners had gotten Bedard to stay healthy and pitch at his 2007 level for a few seasons, it would have been a great trade for both teams.

I agree. I think this is a smart move by the club to lock in a young guy in his prime for a relatively good price.

He's a terrible second half player and apparently he had a 1+ OPS in 2009 at this time in the season(according to Keith Law) also, finished with .792

Jones is a terrible second half player because the O's are usually 20 games out of 1st place by then. He's one of the few players where the constant losing really gets to him and affects his performance. When the team is winning or when the O's aren't a million games out of first place during the early part of the season, he performs at a high level. I'd rather have a guy perform at a high level when the team still has a chance early in the season than someone who sucks early on and then puts up great numbers in the second half of the season when the pressure is off and their team is out of contention.

Because I actually watch all the games. How many Orioles games have you watched over the last four years? Jones refused to sign a contract extension last year because he was tired of playing for a losing team. That's where all the Braves trade talk got started.

Overpay but the orioles have to... But always bad idea to sign extension to a player who is producing well outside of his norm.
If you figure he is worth 2.5 to 2.7 war a year he is worth around 10 to 11 million a year player.
Probably be a corner outfielder in the end of the deal. But the length is about right
