re: Were you a Boyscout? Would you sign your kids up for boyscouts?

Cub scouts is pointless
I was a boy scout and earned life which is right below eagle. I didn't want to do it but my dad forced me. It was probably the best thing that could've happened to me at that age. I learned to camp, cook, clean, and even lost weight. I became a man. I went to philmont twice, quetico Canada twice, and sea base in key west where I learned to sail on the open ocean and spear fish. I would put my son in it but only a good troop that had good boys and scoutmaster. There are good and bad troops. It was an unforgettable experience and I would advise any young kid to do it esp. In this day and age where kids spend all their time playing video games and becoming obese.

Yes, 3rd Generation Eagle Scout.....

Also a Scout Leader (Pack, Troop, District and Council)

And my son is the 4th generation to earn his Eagle.

1. Mom's are den leaders in cubs, right?

2. what's your problem about scout leaders wearing uni's?

looks like you were looking for something to get reactive about.

look back at photos of English scout leaders from 120 years ago. they are in uni's too. You want guys in 3 piece suits to come to meetings?

when I was joining a troop after cub scouts, my friends and I all looked around at about 3 or 4 troops in the area and picked the one we wanted. You really do have to pick a good one. If you really want to and have the numbers, you could form your own also.

In my area, there were 2 good troops and one or two bad ones.

re: Were you a Boyscout? Would you sign your kids up for boyscouts?

well...here's my experience so far.

Got oldest son in cub scouts ... two more to follow, maybe not.

I was never a scout, hasn't hurt me. My older brother was a Life Scout ... he quit to drink beer, chase women, and listen to rock. Being a scout doesn't seem to have helped him.

At any rate ... I signed my oldest boy up. The meetings are unbearably long. There are typically more single mom parents in attendance at the meetings.... sometimes this is ok, as my wife refuses to participate.

I get hit with literally tens of emails in any given week. I had to sell fricking popcorn. I had to build one of those damn pinewood derby cars. I did a little, and made my son do the rest ... only to then find out that the adult-scout-nerds build bad-ass cars for their six-years olds. So, my son was pissed at me when he lost. So, maybe next year, I will help him some more, but i will not get sucked into the frenzy.

My son is now a wolf scout, whatever that means.

There are belt loop thingies for some of the most asinine shite you could ever think of.

You get a friggin' patch for every little thing.

I don't know ... perhaps we'd get more out of it ... if we put more into it ... but, I rank scouts well below sports and the other hunting, fishing, etc, that we do on our own.

I missed out on this thread, but - no I wasn't a boy scout and no I wouldn't sign up my sons to likely get molested.

I made it through cubscouts...got to boyscouts and became a tenderfoot. I went to summer camp in Mississippi in July and said frick this and quit with 85% of my troop after that boring arse week.

I was in boyscouts for like 3 days. I my tent mate left and stuck me with this kid who kept cursing and after each curse word would follow it with "fa'give me lawd!". That's not why I left though. I didn't like standing in line to shoot a bow then standing in line to tie a knot. Just wasn't my cup of tea.

Yep, made eagle before high school so it didn't really interfere with that. Still played all the sports I wanted to, so I don't see why anyone would bring that up. Had some great times, learned some cool skills, and you would be surprised how many people like seeing Eagle Scout on a resume.

If I have a son he will definitely be encouraged to join, though if he doesn't t enjoy it I certainly won't make him stay.

I really enjoyed Scouts, but all the kids were total losers. I had to quit if I wanted any female attention.

I was a scout for awhile.

We were a very loose troop.
Went camping everywhere, did some cool crap almost every weekend, an unruly bunch.
lax on the uni's and rules
Always made fun of the other scouts, we were always, always gun'n on some younger kid in the troop.
When I look back, a lot of us were pretty big douches.

I made alot of great friends also....saying that

If my son was interested (He's 1 now)I' d be cool with it, but as soon as he gets into sports.
I'd push that route a bit more
