I coached for years( travel team) and FWIW I say seven Is too young. The AVERAGE kid quits all athletics by age 13 and burnout is the primary factor

Thats how he is....he always has some kind of ball in his hand.... doesn't matter, as long as he can throw it, catch it, bounce it or hit it, he always has some kind of ball....drives us crazy when he starts with his bouncing, kicking and throwing inside the house.

Truth.

It probably won't make your son any better. He might be a decent HS player because of this, but won't push him to a top tier pass that.

Let them be kids.

Really, 7yo coach pitch travel ball... I'd keep my kid out also. 7 year old kids should be doing more than just playing BB. For a lot of them it's just for the parents. I coached and umpired LL for several years and gave it up mostly because of the shitty parents taking all of the fun out of it for the kids.

We have all stars from the git-go. The teams get harder to make as they progress. When he hits 9, the jump from machine pitch to kid pitch is going to cull a bunch of kids out.

man this thread has really helped me validate my decision. I knew I was right but when I talk to my coaching buddy that is pushing his kid on this team, I try and drop subtle hints like a lot of what you're saying in this thread and he just doesn't get it and it makes me question if I was doing the right thing. Not to mention my kid is better than his kid and I though by keeping my son out he would get it...but apparently he thinks the travel ball team is going to make his son that much of a better baseball player...... I tell him all the time, "Dude, they're 7...it's coach pitch, relax they have plenty of time to get better"

My son was asked at 7 (last summer) to play and we declined. We also declined to join the same team (8 yr old) this summer. To much at this age IMO - in a few years if my son is interested in doing it and is good enough we may allow it.

I guess the team haa a paid coach as well?

Parents are getting way overboard with these kids and playing 75 -100 games a season then wondering why their kids arm is getting Tommy John surgery in Highschool..

What happened to playing on a neighborhood team against other neighborhood teams where you win some and lose some? All this "tournament" ball is nothing more than people making money off parents who are more into the game than the kids.

my younger brother played on one of those teams about 10 years back. shite was intense. they played like 4 weekend tournaments around New Orleans, and it was pretty much all the same teams always involved, just at different parks.

definitely not worth your time or money, especially if you are already in good with the whole politics of the park thing.

This is why I'm glad my daughter's 8-U softball is kid pitch. Puts them 2 years ahead of most leagues. Granted after the pitcher walks 2 it reverts to coach pitch. But it still let's the girls pitch some and hit off kid pitching. A lot of the girls do good with throwing strikes from the middle of the season on

My son is an assistant coach for a travel team. My 8 year old grandson plays on that team with him. Their team elected not to participate in tournaments every weekend. They play every other weekend. So I have to believe it is up to the team.

They still practice 2 times a week, but don't give up all their weekends.

We dealt with this exact situation last year when my son was 7, he played rec, which I think was the right decision at that age. This year, we moved onto an established travel team and he loves it. He did a couple camps prior to the season which really helped him as well. The only thing I would have done differently is to start looking around early for a team to join or tryout for next season, this way you can plan better for where you will practice, how many tournaments you may play in, etc. None of my nephews played travel ball at 7 years old, and 2 of them are on 10U major teams. Sitting out of travel at 7 was not a bad decision.

In a few years

First I'll say 7 is too young IMO. When exactly is a few years though? You can go watch kids at 12-13 and know who has been playing tourney ball and who has been playing Dixie. It's not even close. 10 would be the longest I'd wait. If you're not playing before then, don't bother at all.
