Probably the most dominant team LSU has ever had.

You got that right - the 1997 team was by far the best LSU baseball team ever. They absolutely stormed through post-season play to win the NC. That was total domination - man, they were fun to watch.

To be one game away from a chance at a three-peat (which I think only USC has done) and to watch it slip away was fricking terrible. If I think about it long enough it still bothers me.

The 1998 team stormed through the early games, hitting home runs in bunches. Then a cold front came in, the temperature dropped, the wind blew in, and all those hits that were home runs turned into long fly outs. Damn shame - we should have three-peated.

No ACC team has won a baseball title since the 50's

That's pretty incredible considering the talent that's passed thru FSU, GT, Clemson, UNC, etc

I know. That's why it's so much fun cheering against them (especially Florida State). Mike Martin has won 1,700+ games there with approx. .750 winning percentage and has never won the big one.

It really is amazing to not win it all once with all those wins and chances in the CWS. This serves as a nice dose of reality for that Ole Piss fan that said according to the "law of odds" they'd eventually get to Omaha!

I was going to say that. The ACC's one and only win was Wake Forest in 1955. They've lost:

1970 - Florida St (USC)
1974 - Miami (USC) - independent really
1986 - Florida St (Arizona)
1994 - Georgia Tech (Oklahoma)
1996 - Miami (LSU)
1999 - FLorida St (Miami)
2006 - North Carolina (Oregon St)
2007 - North Carolina (Oregon St)

Just for comparison, current SEC teams that lost in the finals:

1951 - Tennessee (Oklahoma)
1975 - South Carolina (Texas)
1977 - South Carolina (Arizona St)
1979 - Arkansas (Cal St. Fullerton)
1983 - Alabama (Texas)
1997 - Alabama
2002 - South Carolina (Texas)
2005 - Florida (Texas)
2008 - Georgia (Fresno St)
2011 - Florida (South Carolina)

Also, Florida St has 20 appearances, which ranks behind Arizona St (22 with 5 titles), Miami (23 with 4 titles), USC (21 with 12), Texas (34 with 6). Other's that are close to 20: Arizona (15 with 3), Fullerton (16 with 4), LSU (15 with 6), Oklahoma St (19 with 1), Stanford (16 with 2)

Also interesting is that every time LSU played in the finals, it was against a CWS regular

1991 & 1993 - Wichita St
1996 - Miami
1997 - Alabama (maybe not a regular like the others)
2000 - Stanford
2009 - Texas

I don't think any of these were ACC

They weren't at the time, they were Metro Conference (Florida St) and Independent (I think for Miami). But just talking about current conference alignment.

And South Carolina was part of the ACC until 1971

Interesting. Might be true. They just know how to finish. Will this team be able to do that?

12 of 21 is outstanding for USC, but outside of 98 they haven't done shite since the 70's. 6 in 15 isn't bad either compared to 6 of 34 for Texas.

40 wins in the regular season has not been common at LSU (or anywhere else) regardless of the decade.

Yeah, I read this and immediately knew that this couldn't be right, with all the success LSU has had. Just under Tanner (who's 1st year at USC was in '97), we've had 8 seasons with 40+ wins by the conference tournament, beginning with '98. Our best reg. season total was 50 wins in 2000, when we finished the regular season 50-6, 25-5. Ended up 56-10...I still can't believe that we didn't even reach Omaha that year....
