I just started practicing about a month ago, and have played a couple of rounds.
I'm not good at all, but am having fun. I think I'm improving, but my score was worse my second round on a more difficult course. I'll know for sure this weekend when I play a course I have previously.
Like everyone said, work on your short game. Its where I practiced the least and it adds oh so many strokes to my score.

In my opinion, lessons are overrated if you are looking to just become a casual golfer. No need to spend that extra money unless you have no natural ability whatsoever. I personally have never taken a lesson in my 14 years of playing golf and am pleased with learning on my own. It is more frustrating at times, but it is worth the challenge.
There is lots of good advice in here for you, so the main point is just to follow what works for you over time and once that stops working move on to something new.

I will echo several on here with the "have fun" comment. Remember, the odds of you ever getting paid to play are very small compared to the odds of you having to pay to play. Don't set unreasonable standards for yourself. Enjoy the outdoors, drink some beers with your buddies, and never bet more than you are willing to lose !

play from the proper tee box and don't worry about if your playing partners are further back. If they are back there because they should be, they should understand your game isn't as polished yet. If they are back there and suck - then they are wasting everyone's time (and their golf balls) Playing from the proper tees can take off 5-7 strokes easy. There are several tee boxes for a reason
As the FSU golf coach used to say (and has been advised on here)"I've shortened thousands of swings, but never lengthened one" Over swinging is a curse
Accelerate through the ball . Especially on short shots
(The last two are the only swing thoughts I have when I'm on the course)
oh, and watch good players (PGA, LPGA and good playing partners, but if you are playing with some one that has all sorts of hitches in his swing...then just look down the fair way to see where the ball ends up - not at the swing that got the ball there. Golf is a visual game)
