Who's to say he wasn't dumb for doing it? Just because others have dropped out doesn't mean the movie won't be very successful.

Pretty sure they filmed some of it at one of the plantations in the Vacherie/Edgard area. (Oak Alley?). They even grew or tried to grow cotton plants on land in front of the plantation - between the River Road and the levee. I think they ended up gluing cotton balls on the plants.

It was out at Evergreen Plantation in Edgard. They built a replica of the house further back in the cane field, giving it a new appearance. Looks really cool.
