Nitrox is just a different mixture of air. Supposedly less fatigue. I got certified last year on it so havent used since. There is no minimum for cert.

Hey! I'm a NAUI instructor, I can help you out with some questions.

quote:

isnt nitrox certification for diving past 100 feet? is that something you get certified in right away? i dont think i would be comfortable with doing nitrox certification any time soon, i thought they made you do like 50 dives before you can do nitrox certification? also is spearfishing something you need to be certified in? or is that a "hands on" learning experience?

That's a common misconception. Since nitrox is enriched with more oxygen, that means it has less nitrogen, so it lessens the exposure to nitrogen in your tissues and decreases your odds of decompression sickness. However, oxygen above a certain partial pressure is actually toxic. So, for example, pure 100% o2 is toxic at depths of 30 feet. Your max depth is 130 feet on a 32% nitrox mix. Oxygen toxicity causes immediate seizures and CNS problems so you don't want to mess with it.

The prime zone for nitrox is somewhere between 60-120 feet. I use it a lot spearfishing because it extends your dive time drastically, but I don't use it when the bottom is deeper than my max operating depth because I can't go down to rescue someone.

There's no prereqs, and it's a great add-on to your openwater class for just one additional classroom night. It's so prevalent nowadays that it's a nobrainer to pair them up. It's an easy class, you just learn what not to do!

So here are my comments on how to go about getting certified.

There's 3 parts:
1. Classroom, about 8 hours of class time learning dive science, theory, tables, planning, etc. There's also a written final exam, but it's MC and pretty easy, no tricks.
2. About 12 hours of pool time with an instructor learning basic skills for your checkout dives.
3. Minimum 5 dives in open water with an instructor demonstrating your ability to perform taught skills and dive safely.

That gets you an openwater card good for life. However, a card means your "certified" but not neccessarily qualified. There can be a huge difference in the quality of training you receive.

Keep this in mind, especially if you're getting into something like spearfishing. Your dive equipment is your LIFE SUPPORT. The only two things that keep you alive are your equipment and training. I strongly recommend that you don't just price shop to make your choice. Take the total value of the experience into consideration.

If you want to learn from the most skilled and experienced instructors who have a true concern for the individual and the best reputation around this area, I'm sure everyone will tell you where that place is located. Others don't do such a good job. Your training lasts a lifetime, so think of it as an investment. If you get the $200 cheapo cert in Mexico or wherever through someone who bought his instructor cert, not earned it, it will show in your training and abilities.

Anyway, we went spearfishing 6 times in the last 2 weeks and had a phenomenal time! Killed a lot a nice fish and filled up the freezer. In my opinion, the rigs offer some of the best diving in the world! My buddy is editing some great video for the Gopro video of the week, I'll post it when it's done.
