Well then it's decided. Don't split face cards
Again, the ONLY time I would suggest even thinking about it is when you've got dealer showing 5/6, you're playing alone, and you know there's 20 Aces left in the shoe of 50-70 cards.

I could give a frick less about anyone else sitting at the table with me. If you want me to play by "the book" or play to help you, give me some of your money and I will gladly listen to every single piece of advice you want to give me. Otherwise, shut the hell up, sit there and play your damn game and let me play mine. If there are two split cards and the dealer shows something under 7 I am splitting. Why? Because I like to double my chances at winning.

There are certain rare situations where it is theoretically correct to split a pair of face cards. You had better know the count though, and the dealer should have a high probability of busting. But from a practical standpoint it is simply not correct because your play will attract extra scrutiny from the casino from that point forward.

This thread reminds me why I rarely play blackjack anymore and hit the poker tables.

probably already stated, but you can't get the blackjack odds on a split, you just get a 21

Sorry, people bitching at me for utilizing my money how I see fit really drives me up the wall. Especially at a blackjack table. I can't tell you how many times people made comments under their breath about how I wasn't playing by the book and what not.

I second this. If the dealer is showing a five or six, I'm splitting them. One time I did this and two people at the table walked off furious at me. I really hate that they were angry but if splitting is a problem, it should be against the official rules.

If you play where you assume every card is a face card (worth 10 points). Then yes. Also helps to know what the dealer is showing.

Are you one of those players that believes that poor play by others at the table reduces your odds of winning? If so -

The problem is how many of the people that you see try this kind of stuff actually play with the type of attention they should that in order to get a good feel for when face cards are about to come up, how many have already been out, etc.

You being stupid and making a play that nets the house more money in the long run is never going to be against the rules. Unless you're a counter, know the deck is loaded with paints and aces, are deep in the shoe and are playing alone, splitting will likely always increase the house's expected advantage in the long run. Sure, you might luck out in the short run, but if you play that strategy every session without a really good reason to, you're giving the house a greater expected advantage overall and it will cost you money. Basic 6 deck strategy is desiged to give the best odds over the long run and is assumed that you know nothing about prior cards on any given hand. In short, it's designed to play the last hand in the shoe identical to the first hand. If you aren't paying attention to what's coming out and deviate from that strategy without a good reason, you start becoming a very valuable customer.

I am waaay late to this thread and only read the first page bc there is only one answer. It all depends on what the dealer is showing. If the dealer has a bust card (2-6) showing then yes split them if that's how you choose to play. If you're not a risky gambler then stay... nothing wrong with staying, but my arse is splitting as long as I can cover the bet.
