I honestly don't understand how you can expect to bring something into a restaurant, that the restaurant normally makes money off of, and then expect them to just serve it up to you without them expecting something in return.
What's your political views? Are you a liberal? If so, that would explain it.

I didn't expect not to get something in return. We would have tipped the server extra.

I don't think it is out of line for Mansur's to charge the slicing fee. It makes sense for all the reasons people have mentioned here. You would have paid way more to eat one of their desserts (except the birthday boy's gratis dessert). It does NOT make sense to compare Mansur's to Applebee's for pretty much any reason. I think you are whining just a bit.
That being said...I was trying to remember if I have ever brought a cake into any place before, and I have done so twice. First, my son wanted his birthday at Fleur de Lis...they don't serve dessert at all and don't even have plates. Called in advance, they had no problem with it at all and did not charge a fee. Once again, not comparable to Mansur's. However, for my parent's 40th anniversary, we went to Ruth's Chris. I had special flowers for the table and a special cake. They did not charge a slicing fee, and served the cake for us. I was surprised, and tipped really well (they did several extra things for us to make the night special). I would expect a restaurant of that caliber to charge a fee just like a corkage fee.

Hey you forgot to point out about Cannon's and Upperline compared to Mansurs. I am not whining just expressing my point of view. BTW we would have tipped the server extra for taking care of us.

You're an abrasive little dude, aren't you? I did not point out Cannon's and Upperline because I do not think it's nonsensical to compare them to Mansur's. I also am expressing a point of view, and from my point of view you are whining.
In case you did not notice, I was one of the few supporting your weak point by relating a story of an upscale restaurant not charging a fee. You're welcome.

I would have been too embarrassed to send my friend's birthday cake back to the car over that nominal fee per person, even if my friend insisted. I would have felt awfully cheesy.
