The mainstream media today is a joke because they've allowed social media to be a major conduit.

but this story has nothing to do with social media, really

she got a following on covers.com

covers.com allowed her to write a piece. it was popular. ESPN.com (NOT the network ESPN) noticed and signed her to a freelance deal

where does social media come into play?

when did Page2 on ESPN.com become "mainstream media" ?

I'll admit I haven't read the entire story, but I thought I saw where twitter accounts were part of this and FB as well, and the business was driven by hits on web pages. Call it what you want, but the overall internet/social networking aspect has affected the media in a huge way.

So the websites of mainstream media entities (espn, cbs, abc, cnn, etc) are not considered part of their media offering?

Social media is sort of a catchall for internet media. Blogs, magazines, twitter timelines, facebook pages and the anonymity of the creators behind them.
