Absolutely, but that statement was just a complete writing off of NWA like it's Eudora or Dumass, Arkansas. It's not a wasteland. It's a great area with about 450k people, great lakes and entertainment (not like the big cities of course) but imo it would be absolutely worth it to leave. Here, you hardly ever pay to park unless you're in Fayetteville, traffic isn't bad, land and homes are extremely cheap. To me, high traffic big cities are for visiting, not living. But yes, to each his own.

don't count out the Uppereastside along 1st and 2nd ave, that's where i lived and it's chill up there and not as expensive. the subway sucks there in the am though. don't move to brooklyn first though, you'll spend a ton on cabs, do like somebody said and wait till you've settled down a little. also if your frat, rent in murry hill. fratcentral.

I completely understand if the jobs people do is only available in NYC area then stay there for sure. There are really good jobs here from EVERY major company. Of course Wal-Mart, Tyson, JB Hunt. The effect/power of walmart is pretty crazy. Every huge company has offices here because Wal Mart wanted them in town.

well yeah, we don't even have a million people here. for this area's size though there's alot of large companies with small outpost set up. and with tyson, hunt and walmart, those are pretty big companies for the size of nwa.

I live in brooklyn and currently pay 22% of my gross income toward rent. When you first move here, you may be a little scared or nervous to live anywhere else but manhattan. But after a while, you realize living further out isn't that bad and is A LOT cheaper. I live in a neighborhood I wouldn't even go near 4 years ago. I've never had a problem and I live in a great new apartment.

Yeah, but the cost of living is ridiculously cheap. If you're making 150k here, I bet it would be like making a million in NYC. Some people have never lived in a nice place that is also cheap to live in so they wouldn't even consider it. It's all relative.

40% is a good number. When I first moved in I was going about 50% not including bonus.
When I was searching in 2010 all places I looked at required you to make a bare minimum of 40x your monthly rent per year. i.e. if you're looking to rent a $3k place, you need to make atleast 120k/year. Meaning the highest was 30% of the income unless you have a cosigner.

It's cheaper in Arkansas for a reason.

Then go smaller. 2100 sq, 3br, 2bath that will run you $750 a month on a 30 yr note with 0 down.

The difference is you can do anything or get anything delivered at any point in the day/night in Manhattan. Literally. No joke. I grew up in south Arkansas, went to school in NWA, and now have worked and lived almost a year in Manhattan. To kfizz's point, every place has goods and bads. So to the OP, if you're looking to go balls out up here, live in Manhattan. If you want to save a little and still have a lot of fun, live in Brooklyn. If you don't care about having a lot of fun, live in the nice areas of Queens, the Bronx, or across the bridge in Jersey. Oh yea, and if you're a hipster go to Williamsburg in Brooklyn and kill yourself.

That's what I getting at. In Arkansas, if you're from NWA you're considered a city slicker. What you're thinking Arkansas does not equal what NWA is.

Not really. If I'm wise with my money I'll have much more to invest making larger $$$ in NYC. You can argue quality of life but earnings and cash in the bank? Not so much.
