I'm already cringing in anticipation of another tidal wave of tard threads when the player punishments are handed out.

Maybe we can have some real football talk buoyed to stay afloat when the storm hits.

There's a lot to talk about Linebackers...

Vilma/Lofton- how will that work with both of them on the field together?

Can Shanlee hang around another year? Spags tried to sign him in STL.

Nate Bussey: make the 53 this year?

Where and how do Chamberlain & Hawthorne fit?

Casillas last chance to stay healthy?

Is Tez Wilson ready for primetime this year?

Every spot looks to have competition. Who will line up as starters game 1? More reps for starters than the amount of rotation GW used?

With the signings of Chamberlain, Hawthorne and Lofton, the LBs have become one of the deepest positions on the roster.

I'm really happy with how the team handled the LB's in the offseason. They seem like some good character players, too.

ETA: As far as Lofton/Vilma, I guess the team is expecting Vilma to be out for a lot or all of this year.

I think that the lineup pre or post suspension will be:
Hawthorne- Will
Vilma- Mike
Lofton- Sam

At least that is what the coaches alluded to.

During the suspension, I think it will be:
Hawthorne- Will
Lofton- Mike
Shanle- Sam (But I really hope that Wilson, Chamberlain, or Casillas steps up)

I think the interesting thing will be to see if Lofton and Vilma rotate in and out based on obvious pass or run situations.

Vilma i can see moving to the weak side with lofton playing middle. But does vilma still call the plays? And who gets off the field in dime packages?
Chamberlin and Hawthorne will battle for strong and i can see Tez playing with one hand in the dirt.

Vilma will be lucky to play in 5 games this year.

I'm thinking more to the high end myself, 6-8 games.

It will be interesting to see how they are doled out. There might be a number of 1-2 game suspensions. Doing them all concurrently to start the year might be overboard- but I don't doubt it could happen from Goodell.

I am not sure how much Spags sticks with 4-3 or a 3-4 (i dont really know). Assuming there are no suspensions, I would think Hawthorne and Tez on the outside with Vilma/Lofton sharing the inside.

Did not know this/scary thought.

Didn't Vilma spend some time out of the MLB position when he was under Mangini?

I think that Vilma might play a lot more than that if the NFLPA takes this to court. I could see it playing out like the Starcaps situation.

I think that is why it is taking the NFL so long to announce the suspensions. They know that the NFLPA will fight. The NFL is just getting it's legal defense of the suspensions lined up before issuing them.

I don't understand why we would want to move Lofton from Mike. Wouldn't you want you strongest run thumper in the middle?

Vilma/Lofton: Vilma was apparently either a terrible fit when NYJ switched to 3-4 or he hated it badly. That was the main reason he got out. I dunno about him moving to WLB in a 4-3. Lofton was very pronounced in saying he would play anywhere. I'm not seeing him as WLB tho, looks SLB to me. Preseason will be interesting. Could open with a completely different look and roles for LBs.

I am just going off of what Joe Vitt said in his pre-draft press conference.

LINK

quote:

At what positions are you training the linebackers at when you start installing the defense?“Right now we’re lining up David (Hawthorne) at the Will, Curtis Lofton at the Mike and (Scott) Shanle at the Sam. These are going to be movable parts obviously. Chris Chamberlain is coming to us. He’s been in this system. He knows both outside positions. We re-signed Jonathan Casillas today. He’s a Will for us. All this can change. These linebackers have to cross-train in case someone gets hurt. That right now is the starting point.”

Would Lofton and Vilma have a second position, since they both are at the Mike?“If Jonathan was healthy right now, it would probably be Lofton at Sam when we talked about that.”

Apparently not, based on Vitt's comments.

yea I am with you, why would you not want your biggest guy in the middle? Especially when he is suspect in pass plays/he is a run stuffer, he will get beat more off the outs then on the under throws.

Well i guess that settles it....
But from what i understand Spags wants his whole front 7 to know how to play multiple positions, DE to play LB for example.

With Smith being suspended it wouldn't surprise me to see Tez line up at DE some this year.
