This thread reminds me of something else. Italians let their children drink wine in small amounts. They basically teach them moderation at a young age. As a result, they have far fewer problems with alcohol abuse when they grow up.
But that would NEVER go well here, even though it's a great idea. American culture is too ingrained in abstinence.

Making Prostitution, gay marriage, etc legal in the United States isn't going to cut down on rates of Teen Pregnancy, STDs, abortions, etc.
Those things exist in the US regardless of it being legal or not. This is a really a dumb argument for trying to justify legalization of prostitution, abortions, etc.
The reason the US has higher rates is because of the diversity in our nation. We have a wide range of cultures that grew up differently. You go to Eastern European countries and they are much less culturally diverse. Italy has Italians, Germany has Germans, etc.
The United States has Mexicans, Africans, Chinese, Arabic, Russian, European, etc. All of which grew up in widely different households and moral views. This leads to the our statistics being higher. This is also the reason for our country having so many political issues that can't be solved, because there are so many different cultures that you can't please a majority.
I think in America, with our diversity, legalizing a lot of things such as prostitution, nude beaches, abortions would increase our rates.
Even with the European countries allowing these things, the rates are lower because the people are mostly the same culture, and choose not to participate in those acts because they believe it is immoral.
What the article fails to mention is the statistics BEFORE those countries legalized those issues. Did they increase or decrease? I'd be willing to bet they increased.
Those countries most likely had lower rates than the US even with those things illegal.

Oh FWIW on the subject of this thread I was raised by conservative, Christian parents who did not discuss sex. I gave up my scholarship and got married at 18 because sex outside of marriage was forbidden. I wanted to be a good girl. My only regret in life now is not having my college degree.

yea, it's crazy when you start looking at the legal attitudes towards alcohol in other countries. many have very low or non-existant drinking ages, while having relatively low purchasing ages.
exposure at a young age typically leads to less problems with binge drinking and what not as they get older

Did this as well. My girls prefer merlot and mimosas to kegs and tequila shots.
