For the most part, military personnel are admired for the sacrifices that are inherent in the job they do. Some people will never get it. Go to a damn deployment ceremony and maybe you will. Does your job ask you to leave your wife/husband/children/etc for a year with the possibility of never seeing them again?

Nobody forced them to join. I don't believe anyone has much of a right to complain about what they volunteered for.

If they did I'd quit, not expect a parade.

This is normally where I'd disagree with you. Then you'd call me a statist and I'd call you a resident of fantasyland...but I have no desire for our usual quarrel...so.

I'll say this, I'd never sign up for a job that had those requirements.

now you've done it. Invoking 9-11 gives txtiger carte blanche to make this thread excellent!

Actually, be very thankful they did because a draft could be called by the government if not for them.

FWIW, I was one of those volunteers. While I enjoyed my general military life, volunteering to deploy to Iraq has had long lasting effects and is growing to become one of my biggest life regrets. I truly feel bad for all the troops over there because they aren't doing anything worthwhile and they are by and large going to be damaged for life because of it (physically, mentally, or both). It's a shame that our society put them through this. Shame on us.

The liberals have been criticizing them for 47 years and they think it's perfectly fine.

Perhaps people would have a more appropriate fear of a powerful federal government if there were a draft.

Society did not force them through this, they chose to join.

So, you don't like ww2 vets, Vietnam vets, etc either? We need to criticize them too if we are criticizing current ones.

A lot joined under the premise of a paid college education, not multiple year-long deployments to Earth's anus.

I agree. But that doesn't mean that our society doesn't deserve some blame. The choice to join is on the individual troop. The presentation of the option is on society.

I think support for these wars would have been different if it got to the point of requiring a draft. I think there would have been more a public outcry.

I realize I'm to the left of Bill Maher on this one, but I'm honestly curious.
Then I'll give you an honest answer. I'm aware that the men and women who went over there are a mixed bag. For some it was a sacrifice. For some it was an opportunity. Some gave their lives fighting bad guys, some shot innocents. Some did nothing more than clean toilets and sling chow. But I'm glad somebody did it.
