it does. we still need about 7-8 million to get the deal done though.

Cant most of that just be guaranteed? That's what I dont understand about this whole thing.

which is 7 million under what he wants.

It's a helluva lot better then actually being 400K under the cap.

We actually are.....I don't get your point. The only way we don't take the 14.4 hit is if brees doesn't play in which this discussion doesn't even matter. That's why it is on the books. He want's money upfront obviously. We will have to cut people and free up some serious money; to the tune of 6-8 million at least to get it done. Guaranteed money is still on the cap.....

He is counting for 14 million right now. We do NOT need to have extra 6-7 i'n cap space to sign him because part of the total 21-23 he will get this year can be signing bonus money.

thats not what he wants. he wants to be the highest paid QB salary wise. A signing bonus is spread out through the contract, so it wouldnt even be front loaded, which he wants. He wants around $23 mil a year and a lot guaranteed. so yes we DO need more cap room.

A 40 million signing bonus spread out over 5 years would be 8 million per year. 8+ 14 = 22 brees wants 23 this year right?

Ok, all of this is speculation.

If Brees wants 23 mil this year, then keeping him on the tag would be cheaper.

If he's willing to backload his contract, then we'll save space this year.
But if he is willing to backload it, wouldn't he have signed the contract months ago?

I looked it up. Yes the 8 million would count but he would get the whole 40 now right? So we could essentially give him a very low base salary this year. 6 million + 8 would be 14. Therefore he gets 46 right now and we don't need anymore cap space.

correct. he doesnt want to backload. and he pretty much said he wont be signing the tag. just because you tag a player, doesnt mean he will sign it.

and a signing bonus helps spread out the cap hit from year to year, but you still take one.

Yeah, I think the bonus is the part of the contract that can be divided year-to-year.

I think.

See my above edit. If brees is getting a huge signing bonus upfront, then we can pay him a low base salary. 6 mll this year and next. That would save us cap room.

The bonus counts against the cap, too.

Brees doesn't care what his salary is.

He cares how much guaranteed money he will be getting.

And, he cares how much of the contract is likely to be earned (in other words, he doesn't want a lot of the money to be in the last year(s) of the deal.

It's very possible that he gets a large signing bonus which will be spread out from a salary cap standpoint across the entire contract with a low salary number in the first couple of years.

Tell where I'm wrong here. For example:

Drew gets 30 million signing bonus + 8 million i'n salary this year + 8 million next year. That's 46 million for the first two years.

Saints cap hit is 6 million ( signing bonus ) + 8 million salary
14 million this year

We don't need anymore cap space in this case.

Maybe they don't need the cap room, but maybe they wanting a good PR boost after the player suspensions.

None of that makes any sense if you believe the reports last week that a long-term deal actually will reduce Brees' cap number for this year.

I personally think the suspensions will be limited to one or two players, who will lose salary that won't be counted against the cap, and that none of this has anything to do with Brees' situation.

That will only happen if Brees wants to backload his contract, which he may not.

Patrick, you may be right about that.
No one in the organization seems worried about the Brees situation in the least.
