this was my first thought when I read the OP. 10 years ago I went to way too many concerts to buy something at every show.

I will only buy merch from a smaller band at a smaller venue, as I know that money goes to the band, and they need the money. I will usually buy a CD, sometimes a T-shirt. But not always. I do think it's a good way to support the band financially. I have a very good friend who is a tour manager for several bands (depending on who is touring) and I can tell you that smaller bands depend on merch income. Buy a t-shirt if you can. Or a CD.

I'll get a tshirt sometimes if they look cool and if I remembered to bring enough cash.
