Mark Barron will provide great run support in a division with strong running games.

Edited. I hate this autocorrect.

you can find "strong run support" at the safety position in lots of places

no need to spend a top 10 pick on it

I totally agree, but he is definitely a better reach than Ryan T.

Exactly, he's Roman Harper with slightly better cover skills.

Would you take Harper at #7 overall?

Well it was kind of a rhetorical question

But yeah I don't understand the pick at all. The problem is there just wasn't an elite safety in this draft, and I knew someone would reach because of that.

Did he really go way higher than anticipated? I think it was pretty much assumed he wouldn't be around past 14 at latest.

He went higher than most any mock I saw. He was going like 15-25 in nearly every mock.

Obviously NFL teams value players differently than analysts/fans.

I think Barron will be a solid, decent pro. I just don't think he's worth a top 10 pick.

It has nothing to do with him being from Alabama. I've repeatedly backed Richardson being worth a top 5 pick, thought Dareus would be a monster a year ago, etc.

I just don't think Barron is an elite talent.

I think tonight showed the NFL thought Hightower was better than Upshaw.

It showed that ONE TEAM thought that.

I think he's a safe pick and is better in coverage than most on here seem to think. Mayock's "his floor is an all-pro safety" is a bit absurd, I wouldn't say that about any prospect at any position.

Except for the fact that there are loads of Saints fans here, I don't get the Harper comparison. Barron is a clearly better athlete. If you had told me during his college years that Harper would be a long-time starting safety in the NFL I would have been surprised because of athleticism issues.

I agree, I think the Harper comparison is harsh.

My opinion is mostly that there are so few game-changing safeties (really I can think of 2: Polamalu and Reed) that it's not a position I would invest a top 10 pick on.

He should be a good player. How much will he actually affect the game? I'm not sure if he's one of those all-pro, difference making types.

Not if someone above them was going to select Hightower before them, thus why the Pats moved up to get him

Wow. I'd love to be a team GM and make trades with you.

How does that make sense?

Obviously they felt someone else was going to select HighTower before their pick at 27 pr else they wouldnt have given up a 4th rounder to move up to get him

Did the Pats get some sort of guarantee in writing saying whoever they traded with was going to def draft him?

Pats: Hey Team X. Are you going to take this guy with your pick?

Team X: Yes we love him. We are taking him, no doubt. (with no intention of taking him)

Pats: Well, do you want to trade?

Team X: Hmmmmm. Ok. We can trade picks if you toss in something extra.

Thats not what Im saying and thats not how it works

Im not saying the team they traded with wants that guy retard. Im saying they moved up because they felt a team between 25-26 was going to either move up to get him or draft him in those spots

I know exactly what you are asying, but you have no basis for your assumptions.

because they felt

You are assuming the Pats' hunch was correct. There's nothing out there to say any other team would have taken him before the Pats picked.
