jack and arnold will always be golf's favorite sons. tiger has relinquished any claim to that crown.

people hated jack when he played. bottom line is that neither jack nor arnie is a true sports icon like tiger is.

I know in the big scheme it's about the W. However, you must admit golf is a slightly different animal, because you have no physical control over what your opponent might do. So I do think the 2nd place finishes, top tens have at least some merit when it comes to golf. For example, I'd say Lee Westwood is better than Angel Cabrera or John Daly and both have two majors each.

We need a damn golf board I tell ya.

The Masters thread last weekend was pretty awesome. Too bad this week's golf thread will be like 20 pages.

I have no proof, but I think it went at an accelerated rate so people could catch up to Tiger.

it didnt accelerate so that people could catch up to tiger, thats silly.
it may have sped up due to increased interest in the sport, which resulted in increased revenues for the companies that research and develop golf related technologies.

I don't have a single name but I think as a whole golfers are better athletes because they saw how good Tiger was being pretty much the only athlete on tour.

so they quit drinking beer and did some crunches?

quote:

People that hate Tiger still won't call him the greatest, for various reasons.

as already stated, there is a difference between greatest (empircal) and most important (subjective).

i agree but when you have better numbers in every meaningful category (total wins, majors, winning %, money titles, POY's, scoring titles) and only fall short on 2nd's in majors, you are clearly the best.

I will never say he didn't do this. But Tiger didn't have an ARNIE to go against . Think about it. Plus a Player AND A WATSON. YES TIGER dominated, but there is NO golfer that Tiger had to go against as consistantly good as those Jack had to go against. THIS IS FACT.

another thing to consider. how much harder is it to be the best golfer in the world today,as opposed to when jack was on top. much more scrutiny on everything tiger does than jack ever had to deal with

Another quick point on the 2nds in Majors...I think even then, it's context...i.e. Nicklaus' runner up finish to Watson at Turnberry ranks a little higher than say, Ernie Els finishing second (by 15 shots) to Woods at Pebble.

much deeper fields today, more guys to compete with every week. you just named every good golfer of that era. and mickelson doesn't compare to those guys?

The money is irrelevant in this topic.

He doesn't have the Majors .

exactly, tiger has dominated courses like nobody ever has. how many golf courses were altered, specifically because of tiger's dominance? did they ever change a course to try to stop jack?

jack had a hell of a lot more competition. he competed in golf's golden age.

who is the best golfer that tiger has had to reguarly beat to win a major, and compare that person to arnold palmer, tom watson, gary player, et al.

you really are out of your mind.

the fields may be deeper now, but the top players of that era are better than the top players of today - sans tiger.

The top golfers today are better than anybody in the past. Tougher courses and better equipment make for better players old man. Rory would take Jack to the woodshed.

was jack hitting with the clubs that tiger was hitting with?

the club/ball technology today is light years ahead of the stuff from the 60/70s
