I have the Snapshot discount in my car. They took 10% off my rate because of my driving habits. There's no location tracking, and they don't consider how fast you drive. For example, I drive 80 on I-49 frequently. The major factors are hard brakes, mileage, and the time of day you drive. It's a hard brake if you decrease your speed more than 7 mph per second. You get a better rate if you drive 5 miles to work instead 25. You won't get much of a discount if you drive alot between midnight and 4am.

Oh, it doesn't record your location like the OP said? Well the entire conversation I've been having was based on that premise which is now kinda pointless. Of course we can assume this is just the tip of the iceberg.

Well the thread can still be an auto privacy debate. I'm just giving my experience with this particular program. You can access a daily driving report for the times you drove and mileage. There's a speed chart, but the speed is used for increases and decreases to flag the hard brakes.

From bluetooth? I thought the range on that was only 20-30 feet and it needed to pair with a device to be useful.

Yes, there are bluetooth receivers that are set up along roadways. These are what have the 100-200ft radii.

What's the point of having Bluetooth receivers on the side of the road? The majority of people probably don't even have something Bluetooth running in their car when they drive by it.

Yea, pretty sure the % varies depending on where you are, (urban vs rural; demographics of area, etc) but if you are able to get a 10% sampling rate that is considered very good. It still gives really useful data. eta: That number is increasing steadily though. New cars have built in bluetooth which is helping.

Why not just grandma it and save 20% more in the long run? I thought about switching and getting one, but even with the savings progressive is more than my current provider. But I definitely thought it was cheatable and easy to manipulate as long as you don't drive like a maniac for 30 days.

If I was poor and had progressive insurance I'd put it cause I drive 5 miles under most of the time

Well I can't change that I average about 50 miles/day. I think that's on the high end. I was careful about the hard brakes, so that was probably why I got the discount despite driving more miles than average.

I used it and saved $200 for my 6 month policy. Easy money if you don't drive like an animal.

That's not what its purpose is. It is going to be used to provide real time travel time information to users on the highway network. It can be used in so many ways to improve the infrastructure, make things more efficient, save money on local, state, and federal levels. In addition to safety of course, which is the primary concern of the insurance companies.
Making money is the primary concern of insurance companies, don't try that safety shite. Sometimes more information isn't the best thing in the world.

I'm such an idiot for putting one in my truck. I'm now saving 17% per month because of that damn thing. Damn it. There is no GPS. They track the time of day you drive, your speed (the don't give a damn if you go 20 miles over the speed limit. If my daily commute takes me to a max speed of 30 miles an hour I could be in a 10mph zone. The likely hood of me killing someone at 75mph is more than 30mph), and how many times I hard brake (7fps).

When the company points and says "see this works" and people like you are happy do you really think they won't eventually have a gps on it? They ease people into it like they are helping you and people fall for it like sheep

Thats becasue the technology is new and they do not know all the speed limits on every single street in America. Soon they will care.
