When will the team make a real commitment to winning?
How does their farm system look?
When will they actually challenge for a playoff spot?
They have a few good young players who develops into a superstar, will it be Andrew or will he merely be a really good player?

Dunno. They were a contender until late July last year and then imploded.

They've built up a good presence in Latin America with baseball academies and that's going to have to pay off sooner or later.

Pirates get plenty of money from Yankees, Red Sox and others. Needs an owner willing to invest it in the club rather than pocket it

Not too long I think. They have two top 20 prospects coming up in Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon, both of whom are power pitching prospects.

You barely beat me

But I like the direction we're heading.

Young players like McCutchen, Walker, Pressley, Tabata, McDonald with some solid veterans like Karstens, Bedard, Hanrahan, Burnett. The bull pen was one of the best in baseball last year and has a bunch of solid guys that people have never heard of.

In regards to prospects, Starling Marte, who led AA in hitting last year and had a wonderful Spring, should be up by mid season. He's a top 50 prospect in baseball according to BA.

Optimistically you could see Gerritt Cole and perhaps Jameison Taillon at some point next season. Both RHP and top 15 prospects in baseball. Cole much more likely.

Also, the AAA rotation are all guys that are #7-14 prospects in the Pirates system. No studs there, but solid B prospects.

I'd look for the Pirates to fight for .500 next year and compete for the playoffs in 2014.

They are showing signs of going in the right direction. Extending McCutchen was huge. Walker, Tabata, and Presley could all turn into pretty good players. And Clint Hurdle is one hell of a manager. I could see them being a serious threat in the NL Central in 2-3 years.

There isn't exactly a team set to lock down the NL Central for the foreseeable future either now. The Cardinals look more vulnerable than ever and it seems like that division is pretty wide open. Huntington has done a very good job there.

I agree they have a pattern of bringing up kids and then trading them.

What NH has done for the Pirates farm system is incredible. Before he took over, it was one of the worst in the game, now it's a top ten system in baseball.

Baseball Prospectus had six Pirates in their top 101, three of which will be up by mid season 2013 - Cole (RHP) Marte (OF) Grossman (OF) and an outside shot of Taillon (RHP). Tony Sanchez, former first round pick and C of the future should be up too. So should Kyle McPherson, the Pirates organizational P of the year last season. He's in AAA now.

If Alvarez ever figures it out, this team could be scary in the NL Central from 2013/2014 moving forward.

So we've already written off Pedro Alvarez? I know his strike zone judgment is terrible, but he looked promising in 2010 -- he won Rookie of the Month at one point while going on an absolute tear.

Not really.

Every trade NH has made since he took over has worked out well for the Pirates

No one is writing Pedro off, but he's going to have to prove himself. Hell, all he needs to do is hit .215-220 and the Pirates would love that as long as he's the run producer in the middle of the lineup. They need him to be an Adam Dunn lite, in his prime pre CHI.
