it will make no sense to you as you know none of the characters or how they have evolved.

Start from the beginning.

my gf jumps in and out of it when im watching on tv. Says she doesn't really understand why its such a great show. Think its bc she didnt start from beginning. You'll be able to get whats going on but wont appreciate it unless you watch them all

You need to watch every episode in succession, beginning with S1E1, before you get into season 5.

The only thing I've watched previously were the parts of season 4 they were showing on Sunday mornings and on demand.

And I'm enjoying this season a lot. I would go back and watched from the beginning if I could find it conveniently anywhere. But I'm not a netflix customer and all the nearby video stores are pretty much kaput.

You could also blindly jump into Season 5 of Lost and have the same reaction..."this is dumb and boring, I don't understand."

It's not a sitcom...it's like a long movie, you have to start at the very beginning - it's a very good place to start.

The characters are so well developed over the first few seasons that you won't be able to appreciate them nearly as much. Yea, you may be able to pick up on the storyline but that honestly isn't what is most important about that show.

Plus he really won't be able to discuss how characters have grown or changed.

For example if he jumps in during S5. He won't understand the growth of Peter Campbell's character or why Betty Francis is such difficult bitch.

For real. Somebody not watching the first 4 seasons and just jumping in now during season 5 is lazy, stupid and quite honestly pisses me the frick off. Give the show and the art form of television-making at its finest the level of respect it deserves.

You'll never get a full grasp of Peggy, Peter, Roger, Lane, etc. unless you watch the previous seasons.

And you'll have no idea who Don Draper is or what he is capable of.

And you'll miss Sal's awesome Ann Margret impression.

What's the best place to find the early seasons if one doesn't subscribe to netflix? I really would like to watch them.

_ Heck, I guess I should go check to see if the AMC website has them. Failing that, I guess maybe they are for sale at Best Buy or Wally world or something.

You'll probably have to torrent the seasons if you don't have netflix.

someone give mea quick synopsis of the story arch of this show from the beginning to now? I watched last night but obv don't have a clue. I understand Jan Jones used to be married to Don and now he is with some young hot canadian and basically left her in the dirt. What else has happened here? Just stick to the big story

I would never short change Mad Men by pretending it can be summed up in a paragraph.

Mad Men is a great character study more than anything. It's impossible to start watching the show now without knowing the history and background of the characters.
