re: A question about Racism and Hatred of Others

The word racism means nothing anymore. It is thrown around so much for illegitimate reasons, that I am numb to it and skeptical of anyone who uses it.

this is true. racism and prejudice are often intertwined, when they should be used in vastly different contexts.

It's kind of like the word terrorism, another word that has lost its meaning because so many people use it so frivilously.

On the other hand, some people on this board define racism so narrowly, that it's almost impossible for anyone to be a racist unless he is walking around wearing a white sheet with Swastikas and yelling "I hate n****rs".

Trackfan, one thing that really saddens me is that charges of racism have kept Amos & Andy reruns from being shown on TV. Those shows were well written, well acted and funny as hell.

The descendents of the black actors have been denies tons of money in royalties. The plots were no different than The Jeffersons... Scheming husband with a plan, dumb side kick, smart wife who knows better.

Racism HAS a distinct definition. Racism does not equal prejudice. We all have prejudice whether we want to admit it or not. Or brain functions via categorizations.

What about All In The Family and Sanford and Son? You could never produce new shows like these today.

True story: I can't remember the last time I had any race-related problems or confrontations IRL. It only really happens on the internet and on TV. I feel like I'm the target of some epic trolling.

They still allow them to air, though.

The Amos and Andy deal is rather silly.

Some do, some don't. I have friends that are a little racist, but would never admit it, and I have friends that are really racist that do admit it.

Probably not. In fact, I think Chicken's first avatar was Fred Sanford when he started the board. "You dummies."

bullshite! If we define racism as bigotry based on skin color, there are very few places in the world that can compare to the U.S. Just look at our history. Any Black person who has had the opportunity to travel much will tell you that there skin color doesn't matter nearly as much outside of this country as it does in this country. The "Secret Information Concerning Black American Troops" from WWI is a tacit admission by our government that the U.S. was more racist than Europe. And here's Malcolm X said on the issue of race after he returned from his pilgrimage to Mecca:

"America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem. Throughout my travels in the Muslim world, I have met, talked to, and even eaten with people who in America would have been considered white, but the white attitude was removed from their minds by the religion of Islam. I have never before seen sincere and true brotherhood practiced by all together, irrespective of their color."

On the hand, if we're talking about religious bigotry, there's hardly any place on the planet that can match our history for religious tolerance. I've even heard Musllms say that in this country, Muslims have more freedom to practice their religion in the way that they choose than they do in most Muslim countries. And don't forget the Supreme Court's unanimous decision overturning Muhammad Ali's conviction for draft evasion due to his religious beliefs.

I think that many, if not most, racists are racist on a subconscious level and are unaware of it.

And you would be wrong. In Mexico the Spanish hate the Aztecs. In Cuba the Spanish hate the Negro. Hell, it doesn't even have to be race. In Belgium they hate the Dutch.

I think the Aztecs have many more reasons to hate the Spanish, FWIW.

Saying black-Americans may be more generally well received outside of the US than they are here (which, I'm not sure is currently accurate, but I will assume is for sake of this discussion), does not necessarily mean that there are not currently places where other minority races are not treated worse in those places than black-Americans currently are in America.

I doubt this is true, but it really depends on where this notional black person travels. And who he comes in contact with. The more familiarity the group has with Blacks the less likely they are to not be what you consider "racist".

In much of Asia Blacks are not greatly admired, racism against blacks is very strong in the former soviet block.

My personal experience supports your position. I was leaving a free outdoor concert years ago at the corner of Napoleon and Magazine where I had been dancing with a black girl I was dating at the time. Middle of the day on a Sunday. We were followed from the grounds by a half-dozen or so black guys that had taken notice of us. They were only a step or two behind us talking - loudly - about what they were going to do to me for being with her and what they were going to do to her after that.

Thank god my car was parked a few block up directly on Napoleon and not a few blocks up river on a crossing street.

walk into any black barbershop in America and you'll hear what true racism is.
