I was in the same situation last year. Applied for a few cards and got rejected. In June I ended up applying for a discover student credit card and had to lie and say I was still in school, or I probably would have been denied (makes no sense).

With you're lack of credit history the discover student card would probably be your best bet for now.

My GF just opened one of these. Never had a card before, and they started her at $1000 limit. I've made sure she doesn't think of that as money she has, and she pays it off every week.

Just wondering because it mentioned something about me having a home loan and auto loan and I have none of that.

It's just security questions. If you have no history they generate random info and you just click none of the above.

Any suggestions on building credit when creditkarma has labeled you as "thin file"?

quote:

What's a thin file? When you have a "thin file", you have a limited credit history with few credit accounts, so it is not possible to provide you with a credit score. Consumers with a thin file have difficulty getting approved for most financial products because lenders are unwilling to risk lending to someone with limited credit history.

Thanks.

Gas, hotel stays and flights. I will be reimbursed for all of these things.

i just got the amex blue cash preferred in yesterday. 6% cash back on groceries and 3% on gas is the main reason i wanted it. did the math and it works out to where i pretty much get a month of groceries for free.

one nice little tidbit was that in my approval letter it said that my equifax credit score was 822. i knew it was around 800 but wasnt expecting that.

eta: for my next card i plan on getting either an amex or visa rewards card. plan on putting all my expenses on there besides groceries and gas to hopefully get annual vacation flights or hotel stays.

The groceries don't count shopping at wal mart or target type stores right?

i dont think so. from what ive seen online it needs to be a dedicated grocery store. i usually purchase alcohol and tobacco from gas stations so i curious to see if it counts towards the 3% gas. 3% on a $28 bottle of crown is like $.84

Go to creditkarma.com and tell us what your score is.

It probably won't be great if this is your first card, but it will give us an idea of where you are.

THF, how accurate is their rating?

by putting hotel, planes, and gas on a credit card would Capital one be the best option?
