Great players make big plays in important games. TM7 does in 2012 what he did in 2011, then he is the greatest "play maker" in LSU history.

Go back and watch a few games this season. I believe it was arkansas and wvu that used a bunch of shifts to isolate wrs on tm and were very successful doing so.

I have no problem with someone calling him a great playmaker, but calling him great in coverage tells me that you are either not watching him in coverage or you are watching him through purple and gold glasses.

I don't expect you to change your mind but to say he is average in coverage is absurd IMO.

Agreed, he is in good position to defend passes a very high percentage of the time, if he was a few inches taller this would be much more apparent as he is covering guys taller than him all the time.

TM7 is one of the most exciting players ever to wear a Tiger uni, but not the best player and has been helped by the secondary talent he has around him on the field.

Dude turns games around at his position like no other. If he has another amazing season next year, you would be very dumb to say he's not in contention of being the best to ever put on a LSU jersey. TM7. Joy to watch

First, I never said he was great in coverage. However, he is certainly better than average.

I have the West Virgina game and the Arkansas game DVR'd.

TM7 is hands down the MVP of both those games but his coverage skills were exposed a little because someone caught a few passes on him so he should get less credit as an overall football player by your logic I guess.

There is nothing average about TM7's ability to play defense. Coverage is better than average. Yes he is helped by the talent around him, but this doesn't take anything away from him. That is like saying 'Man, Peyton Manning isn't one of the greatest QB's ever because his whole career he had talented WR's around him like Marvin Harrisson and Reggie Wayne."

Where TM7 might be lacking in coverage skills, he certainly makes up in his tackling and stripping ability at that position.

No but it is going to take away from him being the best LSU player ever. Like I said, he is a great playmaker, but for me to consider him the best ever he needs to improve in coverage considering he is a cornerback.

I think he's pretty good in coverage especially when you consider he's a "cornerback" but rarely actually covers anybody b/c he's so great at freelancing. I think if he actually had to cover all the time, he'd be great at it. This actually adds to hugo's claim that he could be the best player in LSU history, not diminishes the claim.

he's very good in coverage and is the best play-maker on defense in at least 30 yrs, hands down. And he's also a very dangerous return man. He's no doubt in the conversation for best football players in LSU history w/ a repeat of his sophomore campaign

I remember at one time we thought Justin Vincent might be the best RB in LSU history before he was done.

Oh yes show me a picture of one play in coverage against a pretty bad florids team and I will be impressed.

Ok. Show me a picture of how many times he looked bad in coverage?

Not very many. One play against Tenn and a few against Bama. Which I might add, was impossible for him to cover against Bama. They were back shoulder throws and TM was playing through the WR. That is impossible to cover for a CB. But yea, all those awards he won and he is a mediocre coverage CB.

Just forget about the rest of the year in coverage. Let us only remember a few bad plays.

The rant is fricking hilarious.

solid post... he's a great tiger, and we're very privelidged to watch a kid with his playmaking abilities.. i just hope his production doesn't drop as he takes on a more vital role in coverage and doesn't just become a nice little footnote in LSU football lore.. i think it would help him out tremendously if one of the younger guys and t. simon can step it up and cover the outside receivers, thus leaving TM7 in the slot...

either way, he's solidified himself as one of my favorite tigers of all-time

Yeah, that was after his freshman year.

Thing seemed to go downhill after that.

TM7 is already in a different atmosphere than Justin Vincent.

Good point nonetheless.

Do you just forget about all the great plays he makes in coverage too? Did you forget that play against TAMU where a certain 5'8 CB was covering a big arse TE and just TOOK the ball from his hands in coverage? It was called back(bullshite call too) but that play was awesome. I liked the one where he put the Ar-Kansas TE on his arse and stripped the ball too. He's like Bob Sanders going in for a hit...minus the injuries...

Something else to consider is LSU's 2012 softer schedule not giving him as many opportunities to make game breaking plays.

But as long as we win, who gives a shite.

don't you think that would give him more of a chance? more punt returns, opponents passing b/c they're behind, etc

Deuce, If your point is that he mad e some great plays, I don't see how anyone can deny that.
However, I think the question posed is whether he is "the best football player in LSU history".
He is highly decorated.
That often comes from being a great player on one of the top teams.
In my view Cassanova was a better defensive back and overall player.
He was a Heismann favorite prior to his senior year, when he was injured.
Cassanova played both ways(led LSU in rushing as a freshman)and returned punts (two for touchdowns in one game vs. Ole Miss).
Both appeared on SI's cover
Cassanova's said "Best football player in America" or something close to that (someone will likely correct me, but that's pretty close...I've slept since...)
