What did we initially see when hiring TJ?

I remember when we hired him and it seemed like a good hire based on his ability to take his last two teams to the Sweet 16.
But over the last few years of watching LSU basketball, I haven't seen a fluent offense or any good fundamental basketball.
My thought is that if you don't have superior athletes, you should be fundamentally sound and run offensive sets to perfection.
I understand it takes time to build talent on a team especially because LSU is not known as a basketball school, but as a COACH he should have been able to teach fundamentals and have his team play solid. I'm just not sure if TJ brings anything to the table, so could someone please clarify what his philosophy has been the last 4 years?

I didn't pay attention to Stanford, but I knew of him. I was shocked when we hired him. I always like Steve lavin and knew him in the days I paid more attention to NCAA basketball. I still want him as coach.

Johnny Jones is doing ok right now. I woulda kept it in house. You need a good recruiter more than a good coach.

The Lopez twins helped TJ fool us into hiring him, shades of Curley and Brett.
ETA: I obviously needed more coffee. I will blame late nights and the F&D FBD crowd for destroying my brain cells.

Why would a guy who played for OU help TJ fool us?

I thought it was Lew Alcindor who helped TJ fool us into hiring him, which brought back shades of Curley and Brett
Actually I thought the hire of TJ was done moreso to keep the "not enough black coaches in the collegiate game" people off our backs

Real nice! You are so cool and clever. Way to rep our fanbase. That will go over well with potential recruits and their families. Keep up the great work. You and those of your ilk are really needed as fans.

He got Nevada to 25-9 and Stanford to 28-8 in his fourth season. Upward trends in wins at both schools.. It was a good hire.

it was perceived as a good hire. No problem with it at the time. And,after the SEC title in year one I thought we had a real good one.

People that post stuff like this should have those privileges taken away. We can talk all day about whether we should fire him now, but to act as if, four years ago, Johnny Jones was a better hire than Trent Johnson is asinine. Johnny Jones had never even won the Sun Belt and TJ had been to multiple sweet sixteens, and had been coach of the year in two conferences.
We can act as if we knew this outcome four years ago, but the fact of the matter is we didn't. All we knew were the facts at that time, nothing more. And at that time, TJ was a solid hire. The fact he hasn't worked out doesn't change the fact that his resume was far far superior to that of Johnny Jones at North freaking Texas.

St. Johns blows this season. I haven't followed them so I don't know the situation around them sucking but at the moment Lavin seems like a one hit wonder there when he jumped back in the game.

When Trent has talent, he will coach them well (see his first season).
Problem is, he can't bring in the talent.

I still wouldn't really want Johnny Jones.
