I've been allergic my whole life so I'm kind of used to it. It just sucks this time of year being invited to crawfish boils and not being able to eat something that smells so good.

I'm allergic to Mahi Mahi. The owner of Maxwell's told me it was because of very high iodine content. It sucks because I love the taste of Mahi Mahi but I break out in itching all over my arms.

That's weird. It's the iodine that I'm allergic to, but I'm pretty sure I've eaten mahi mahi before with no issues.

I tried it at 3 different restaurants and got the same result.

My fishmonger says that when he cuts Mahi Mahi his cutting board is black with iodine. I didn't even know that iodine in fish was black.

What do you eat with iodine that you're allergic to?

I was always told that shellfish had iodine in it.

No, but my grandmother was fine until she was in her late 50s early 60s when one day she ate a shrimp and went into severe shock. I'm terrified it runs in the family and in a couple years it'll hit me too. I might have to move to a different state just to avoid the temptation

I think it is weird when people call crawfish seafood when it comes out of the mud.

But it is in a shell, I get it.

Sucks you can't eat'em.

My grandfather, myself, and my brother all ate crawfish as children and teens and became allergic in our twenties. It is worse to be around crawfish now because I used to not be allergic and I know how good it is. I can eat any other true seafood and am not allergic to iodine at all. Only crawfish.

Alot of people say that they would eat it anyway, could not live without it, yada yada yada. Believe me hives, shock and vomiting will change your mind.

Probably, but at low levels. I've eaten shellfish all my life and never got a reaction like Mahi Mahi.

How do you "become" allergic? I am praying now that this never, ever, happens.

Happened to me with crawfish. Bad reaction to it when about 30 years old. And I love em. I don't know why, but I can any any shellfish, or seafood with no problems.

From webmd

quote:

Researchers define "seafood" as finned fish (tuna, cod, salmon) and shellfish (shrimp, crab, lobster, scallops, clams, squid). An allergic reaction to certain proteins in seafood can cause life-threatening anaphylaxis -- a sudden, severe, potentially fatal reaction that results in low blood pressure and throat swelling, making breathing difficult. Seafood allergies can also cause a severe skin reaction or can trigger an asthma attack.

I guess the proteins in the fish is what does it.

I'm seriously thinking of getting a shrimp po-boy to go, drive to the emergancy room, and eat it in the lobby.
