Just be a good neighbor and cut them clean and vertical so they can heal. To cut part way and then tear them horizontally will leave the roots susceptible to disease

Took an ax straight to the bigger ones (again not even that big). Seemed really clean. Just ripped the small quarter inch or so runners as those guys basically formed a matrix on top of my yard.
