I just saw a suggestion somewhere that might work. I have a wrought iron fence surrounding my yard and I'll try stringing fishing line around the bottom to keep them from being able to get in the yard. They'd have to fly over the fence and I think they'd just go somewhere else. Might work.

Another long term option is pesticide. If they are there after the rain the way described in the OP, they are eating bugs and chit.
