Saw the Oscar nominated live action short films. I truly believe the short feature is the most underrated and underused form of art in film today. A well-executed short is something to behold. The ability to achieve character development that endears the audience to the characters and the ability to create a catharsis in such a short period of time is impressive and, when executed well, surprisingly powerful. My favorite of this year's nominations was 'Pentecost.' It is very funny, and the way the story slowly builds up to its climax is very enjoyable. But I'd say the Oscar favorite would be 'Raju.' The American entrant, 'Time Freak,' is charming and funny but I don't see it being a serious contender for the Oscar.

Truth is some films' concepts today would be better as short films and should be short films, yet it's been stretched out and loses it's pizzazz and then changes into a trite Hollywood rendition. Keeping something about 20 minutes really puts the artist and audience in a tight time frame, which really allows exploration of some great subject matter if done right. I am a fan of films that are a series of shorts. So that's my main source of shorts. But every once in a while I happen upon gems that are their own entity...

Can we turn this into a thread that is a celebration of shorts? Like post links to really neat shorts?

Also, I really really like short stories, this is probably my major input of brief source material, and they are very analogous to short films when you compare them to novels (movies).

Short film : Movie :: Short story : Novel

So, and I am serious about this, I dog ear and save the pages of short stories or book chapters that would make a great short film.

One book that I had a lot of these in was Welcome to the Monkey House by Vonnegut. One of his short stories, "Harrison Bergeron", from that book was actually made into a great short film with some well-known actors. It's called 2081. Here is the trailer.

You can find the full version on the nets.

I hope more posters share in this thread. Short films are great.

Neat!

Also, I'd like to add that if I were ever to get into film it would be in short film. In fact, that's how every director gets into film. It's just the best form of film, IMO. And the canvas is completely bare. You can do anything you want for them! It's quite neat. I've written and shot my own shorts, but they aren't anything special. I have since been writing some longer shorts. Like 20-30 minutes. They are nothing special either, but they've allowed me to really test my dialogue skills.

And short film is the only medium that hobbyists like me can practice something I love. With movie tech where it is right now where software and equipment is more and more available on the cheap, it makes the short film a very important part of putting film in your life and actually participating in something you get so much joy out of: actually participating in the art.

So the best short films are the cream of the crop in that everyone makes shorts, but it is those shorts that get honored that have the most use out of all the minutes on the screen and affects the audience the most.

We should have a Movie/TV Board Short Film Festival.

As a filmmaker, the problem with shorts is that they have virtually no market. You are still mustering a lot of time, money, energy, and troops, so you might as well just press on and complete a feature-length movie (unless you're interested in transitioning into a dp position or something of the like).

True.

So you could go the extreme version of shorts and make commercials, or make a movie of/participate in a shorts project film. Even if there was a theme to the film, like "New York" you could still fit your idea in some way.

Yeah, it's unfortunate, but you need that one short in your portfolio to A) get you into the business and show you have what it takes, and B) to prove that you actually have talent.

I think if I were bound and determined to make a short, I'd make a music video. You can do a lot of visually and aurally interesting things within a 3-minute time frame.

I liked Tuba Atlantic best, followed by The Shore.

Time Freak was probably my least favorite (still good, just last in preference). The Shore was my second favorite. Seamus McGarvey did the cinematography for it, who I sort of have a film crush on because of his work on We Need To Talk About Kevin
