No it was a regular season game, not sure about Gtwon even being involved but I know it was a reg season game, Saturday afternoon
I worked the night LSU vs Gtown in the tourney so know it wasn't that game

ESPN has a boxscore for the game on March 18, 1988 ( LINK):
I remember being pissed that Georgetown won on a freaking 3-point buzzer bankshot by Charles Smith.
I don't what remember what went down on LSU's possession right before that though.

the game in question with Vargas being told not to shoot (and we all know he did) was in the 1985-1986 season at Georgetown. It was one of LSU's first games back after postponing at least one (I know Auburn for sure, can't remember if there were any others)for chicken pox.Seems like we played UK at home and lost to them on a Roger Harden buzzer beater and played at Georgia on a Friday night and lost badly. The Georgetown game was John Williams' first game back and even though this was the first year after Ewing, Georgetown was still a top 10 team and LSU played valiantly losing at the end.Dale couldn't have been more emphatic about not letting Vargas have the ball.
Dale did enjoy being miked. Two years earlier on SR Day at Rupp, Dale was miked on NBC (who still did some games even without the tourney).LSU got just smacked but as always UK got all the calls at Rupp that day. For the tv and microphone Dale called over one of the refs, Paul Galvan. If anyone remembers in the infamous clock malfunction game at home vs Tenneessee in 1982, Galvan was the lead ref.Dale and LSU blackballed him the next year. Dale said something to the effect, "Paul, I blackballed you last year and I'll do it again if this continues." I'm sure that went over like a lead baloon with all officials.

Yes, Dale always loved the mike. And there was never much of a filter between brain and mouth.

Excerpt from page 57 of the book "Don't Count Me Out" describing part of the 1985-86 season...
...Shortly after the Georgia game, the team's charter flight left for Dulles International Airport. LSU would go on the court in less than 24 hours against Georgetown...John Thompson's team was a big favorite playing before a home crowd and against a tired, depleted LSU team. Georgetown had not played in four days and was fresh.
...(John Williams) almost single-handedly broke the Hoyas' vaunted full-court press and scored a career-high 28 points. Late in the game, LSU had a chance for the winning shot and called time out. Brown wanted Williams to take the last shot. He didn't want Vargas to so much as touch the ball. But on the inbounds play, Williams was covered. Anthony Wilson passed to Vargas, who put up a lame shot, missing everything. Don Redden fouled Georgetown's Michael Jackson going for the rebound. Jackson got two free throws. LSU lost, 74-72.

Is there a photo anywhere on the Internet of Jose Vargas holding a bag of Tiger Chips?

That was a team that defied the odds. Dale coached best when the team wasn't loaded with stars but players that stayed the course.

Outstanding memories. I miss Dale.

Remember that vividly. It was against Oklahoma in '88 or '89. Jose' gets that ball and immediately lays a brick. "Whatever you do, Jose', DON'T SHOOT THE BALL!!!"

Not too vididly.LSU beat #3 Oklahoma who would go on to the National Title game in 1988.
The game in question was two years earlier vs Georgetown.

I think it was 2002 vs. Arizona. Or 1990 vs. Loyola Marymount.
I can't recall exactly, but I know I was there.

It was from the 1985-86 Final Four season. We lost to Georgetown by 2 points. It was on CBS. Classic moment. John Williams dominated. Jose paniced and threw up an airball.

87% certain that the two never played together. Think Jose graduated in in spring '88 and Mutombo started the following fall.
Might have been Alonzo Mourning. I know Georgetown had a stud center (don't think it was Ewing) at the time.

Well it might be from the opening round of the NCAA Tourney in March 1988. I can't find the video for it, but if it involves Vargas & Georgetown, then that's likely the game in question.
Not that game. I saw that game live up in Hartford, MA. We lost that game at the buzzer on a 3 pointer that one of the Geogetown guards banked in from 25 feet at the buzzer...
I saw the "Don't try to create a shot, Jose" on TV.
