I start getting sad once all the characters I like start getting killed so I wanted to stop before the show would do that.

The show went downhill starting with the second half of Season 4.
Every season has 8 episodes except the 4th, which has 16. The 9th episode of S4 is where the downfall starts and you notice if right from the start.
The 8th episode of S4 is maybe the best of the series. Of course, the thing that made that episode so great is part of the problem from that point on.
I loved the characters on that show and Ryan O'Reily remains my favorite TV character ever.
