I like when they say, "Yeah, but I get my money right then. Will a CPA give me my money right then?"

It puzzles me how many Guard members there are that don't use the benefits for school. Yet they will complain that they can't find a job, lol.

I agree, but most of the guard (at least in the South) are just a bunch of rednecks that don't have any drive or want to go to school.

Another reason why is because it can be the biggest pain in the arse to get the money sometimes. They make it that way so people just say "frick it" and not go to school or just not get the money.

I hate the guard so I make damn sure I get the only benefit out of it that's worth anything.

This semester I got money from 4 different sources. Tuition is fully paid and got 5k in straight cash money.

Next semester I might have to pay $1,000 out of pocket at the most.

Then I get $1400 a month during a full month of class b/t gi bill and drill pay.

It's not so much they didn't go to school (that's part of it) but it's they are just stupid.

Here are examples on Facebook of multiple people in the Guard;

"everyday i get up and go too hell hole to make a few bucks but at the end of day and the start of my day is the most amazing thing of my life.i wake up too most wonderful thing in world i lay down wth her,i tlk my promblems out wth her she is awsme she dnt worry about money she dnt care all she wants is my love i will always stand bye her give her my love and make her feel as good as i do i love u amanda wth all my heart thnk u for cmeing in my life and do put up wth wht u do wth my past and my life!!!!"

"well i dont know what to thank its all going so fast one more week until big dayveiw fight in samtown wow!!!!!!!!!!"

That's right, he wrote dayview for debut.

"wel i am up still have the head ach ive had for bout a week now but oh well got to get things done round here go back to work monday yea thank god so ready go crazy when i dont have work to do"

This is no punctuation guy. He has many more that are a lot longer than that was.

It isn't hard at all here in Louisiana. All you do is check with the school and see if you are on the Tuition Exemption list. If you aren't, you can call the education guy and they will get your name added. Between no tuition to a state funded school, Post 9/11 GI Bill & kicker, I made money to get my degrees. Now our state will help with a masters. I am n the process of finding out if it is still tuition exempt or does it go to TA.

We only get a cap of $4,500 a YEAR for tuition/fees from FTA. So that doesn't cover but 1 class the second semester in my situation.

It worked a lot easier this semester with GOARMYED instead of my state processing it.

Arkansas doesn't do anything for grad school right now. The reserves I think might but not for the guard. That's pretty annoying, I think I should get 36 months of it all. It's kind of like getting punished for finishing school early. I'd understand if I never did anything but I did route clearance in the Kandahar Province in 2010. I'll still have 16 months remaining on GI Bill but really feel I deserve the FTA for 16 more months as well.

Long story short:

Went in and did my taxes yesterday, she added the "American opportunity tax credit" due to I was in school this year. with the credit being added, it increased my return by a couple hundred dollars.

She filed it electronically.

she called me today saying that she did research into the credit and said that I cant use it, due to the fact that im past my 4 years in college. and that I have to come back in so that they can do an amendment..

when she amends it, make sure she applies the American Opportunity credit. It is designed for people who are past 4 years of school. It is 20% of expenses up to $10,000.

and next year make sure you don't go back to her to do your taxes. Someone who does taxes for pay and isn't familiar with these two credits and the differences between them is very odd.

Where are yall getting the past 4 yrs thing? Here is something straight from the IRS site.

LINK

Look at question 12. You cannot take 2 yrs of hope credit and then 4 yrs of American Oppurtunity Tax Credit. Now, if you find something different, please link for us.

The American Opportunity Credit has only been available since 08.

Screw that, you wont get a letter.

Also when you fill out the "Qualified Expenses: Course Materials required to be purchased or not" section, you can put up to $4000 in expenses, They won't know

IRS cant track fraud apparently
