just popped the cork on an Ommegang Abbey Ale. First time trying this one. That is a beautiful beer, when you first pour it into a glass...thick, rich head and very deep reddish/brown color. fruit notes in both smell and initial taste but definitely not overly sweat. I'm only a few sips in but I like it so far.

I figured you'd like it. Like I said a few days ago, if you don't like this one, you probably aren't going to like Belgian style ales.

No FBD for me yet. I just got back from picking up the beers that Icansee4miles had for me and they need a little chill first. He gave me a 16 bottle sampler of mainly Bell's and Goose Island. I have the Bell's Double Cream Stout and the Goose Island Christmas Ale in the freezer for my upcoming FBD. Thanks Icansee.

My pleasure. So interesting proving what a small world we live in one more time.

I think all your talk about the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout had me craving one, so just cracked one before the venison lasagna assembly begins.

i've said it several times on here but access to Bell's Brewery is probably the only thing i miss about living in the midwest. been about three years since i've had any of their beers. Enjoy...

Well, what is your next step in Belgianbeerland?

Their Two-Hearted Ale is the only one I've had to date. That will change real soon!

FBD: Bell's Double Cream Stout. Very nice, even though I got it a little too cold. Wonderful roasted malts, chocolate milk and coffee flavors. Although light in body compared to many stouts, it has a great silky smooth mouthfeel. I know it is only going to get better as it warms up.

i'm open to suggestions, if you have thoughts on which direction i should go next. as i've said, I'm new to Belgians so almost anything you suggest will be new ground for me.

i have a few bottles of the Dogfish Head Faithfull ale (pearl jam 20th anniversary commemorative beer), which is a Belgian strong pale ale i believe. haven't tried one of those yet.

Yes, so true--and thanks again.

Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

I saw that Matherne's on HIghland restocked this last week. I guess I need to buy a couple more 4packs before it is gone for the season.

I have not had that one. Since Ommegang is available to you, try some more of their lineup--it is solid. Three Philosophers is one of my favorites.

As for other domestics, Brooklyn's Local 1 and Local 2 are also very good.

Unibroue from Canada does Belgian style ales as good as anybody. Maudite and La Fin du Monde are 2 you must try. Trois Pistoles, La Terrible and others are just plain awesome.

The actual Belgians are too many to name, but some of my favorites are Gouden Carolus, Corsendonk, Koenigs Hoeven, Westmalle, Grimbergen, Tripel Karmeliet, and of course Chimay, which is readily available and so damn good.

Try them all!

Just cracked a Goose Island Matilda. Very, very good. Spicy, fruit and citrus. Similar in style to Brooklyn Local 1 IMO.

I was hoping my go-to store would still have some of the Goose Island Christmas Ale. I'll have to wait until next year for that. But the Bell's I just had was pretty good. Glad you got to try the Goose Island line.

Only had these 2 so far, but I am impressed. So many great beers out there. We live in a great time.

FBD was Boston Lager
SBD was mighty oak ale? Or whatever it's called.
Third and final beer is my homebrew IPA.

Black ops is intense. Very bourbon like.
Let me know about 1000 IBU and hop breakfast. They're on my radar.
