Shutter Island ***SPOILERS***

Is the general consensus that Leo was "cured" of his psychosis in the end of the movie and chose to be lobotomized rather than live with the guilt? I thought that the last line Leo said to the doc made it fairly obvious. Something like, "is it better to live as a monster or die a good man".

That is my take on it. You can go either way just like Inception I suppose. What is it with Leo and leaving things open to interpretation?

yeah the general consensus was that he knew what he had done and didn't want to live with the guilt.

Yesh.

Yeah e couldnt live with the fact that he didn't do anything to help his wife's problems. He felt he couldn't stopped what she did but he was too busy drinking. So he said that awesome man/lion quote at the end of the movie. I just wish his "partner" would have said something bc it seemed like he knew the decision he was making and would have stopped him.

But the whole point is that his "partner" is really his doctor. The true final twist of the movie is that his doctor KNOWS that he is lucid, yet he allows him to opt to kill himself.

I agree that it was unsettling to think that the doctor was fully aware that Leo was essentially killing himself.

guilt is a powerful thing to try and live with

The doctor couldn't have done anything. Leo would have just acted crazy again to get what he wanted.

That's what I was saying. That's why I put "partner" in quotes. I just think he shouldnt have let him go through with the lobatomy. He knew he was putting on a show there at the end. You wouldn't let your patient go get one once you've realized he is ok just couldn't live with what happened. He could have treated him for that now.

I see it as a sort of assisted suicide. The guilt over what happened was essentially incurable. The doc felt that he was relieving his patient's pain.

This and honestly he doesn't know for sure either. If he stops leo from going through with the lobotomy and then he goes off the deep end again and kills someone else then what?

So wait.. do yall think he was doing it on the purpose the whole time?

Possible theory. At the end Ruffalo yells out his "fake" name in a moment of weakness. This could lead one to believe that in fact none of that family being murdered/kill my wife stuff actually happened. But why would they choose to do that to someone? Well, earlier in the movie, the general, it escapes me who plays him, and the doctor were talking about controlling a mans mind or recreating his memories or some shite like that, so that they could use it in war. This scene was meaningless otherwise. What if Leo was an experiment? Possible interpretation with nothing really to dispute it.
By the way, its been a year since ive seen the movie. In fact the writer of the book said that he wrote the story with the idea that Leo's character just reverted. Not that he was pretending or an experiment. Straight forward. Scorsese added something that added possible other interpretations.

One thing I felt was surprising was how did everyone know exactly what happened at the lake? Leo was the only one there and when the police come they basically find his 3 children drowned and his wife shot.
Sure he could have told them what happened I guess, but how do you prove that? And then when exactly did his fantasy kick in?

no, we are saying at the end, he remembered what he did and didn't want to live with that memory

Either that or they convinced him he was crazy.
