Maybe I am dumb but I can't connect the two dots...

Shouldn't recruiting classes be measured by success on the field?? Currently we wait for some "experts" to decide who has done the best prior to seeing anything on the college field. And the coaches are held responsible for these "experts" opinions by you bunch of bottom feeders. Talk about the dumb leading the dumb. Somebody please use your own head on here. Please!!! I like it here but this becoming way to rant-ish.

(1) Success on the field involves a lot more variables than recruiting classes. To judge a recruiting class solely by the team's accomplishments years later would be a fallacy, because many coaches get the best out of limited talent while others underachieve with great talent. We judge whole teams based on success on the field, not individual recruiting classes. (BTW, using this same logic, it also sort of makes sense for Bama/LSU/etc. recruits to get a "bump" because their future coaches are more likely to actually coach them up to their potential.)
(2) It doesn't sell subscriptions for the recruiting services to say to their customers on NSD: "Stay tuned! In just three to five short years we will let you know who had the best recruiting class this year."

Is this not the case in high school and the nfl? Do NFL fans follow a bunch of dummies regarding draft rankings? This makes no sense to me.

I've seen enough of your posts to know you are not serious...btw...I think Landry will be our number one receiver next year.

Typically the teams that participate in the national championship don't see the huge uptick in recruiting until the year later; consider that there's a month between the championship game and signing day. That's not much time and most recruits have already made their decision by then, the teams have most of their pledges by then, etc. We'll have a top 3 class next year almost without a doubt, even if we lose on Jefferson and Diarse.

Think of our best freshemen over the last two years.
If you thought Tyrann Mathieu, Odell Beckham Eric Reid, or Kenny Hilliard, then congrats you didn't think of single 5 star.

Historically - TOP recruiting classes = winning program.
AL is not falling from the top echelon anytime soon.

its called an inexact science, this should tell us something right there.
It is an unfortunate reality, the business of recruiting is here to stay and all the logical independant thinking won't put a dent in it.
but I agree, its whack.

Yet we are always so surprised that 2 stars and 3 stars become stars...but it is more common then not at every program at least as compared to their star rankings. They didn't get any magic dust in college either. Does anybody not want to admit that the current state of recruiting evaluation is shooting in the dark at best. It may get better as that business grows but not yet. AND grown ups with responsible jobs will get on here like a bunch of sheep and cry and want Miles and Co's head. So stupid it's funny really

quote:Yes, that is the case in high school and the NFL. We judge overall teams based on their overall success on the field. Not sure what is controversial there. And yes, NFL fans DO do that. They look at what McShay and Kiper and Mayock and Lombardi and King and others say right before and after the draft and generally react accordingly.

quote:I agree, but it's just the nature of the beast. You asked to connect the dots as to why they put out recruiting rankings now and not measure them later by on-field success, so I gave a very simple explanation: to sell subscriptions and make money.

think of it as akin to preseason rankings. no direct correlation to the finishing rankings, but as a reliable indicator of future success as anything else.
