I have to write a short film (possibly to be extended to full) and my initial idea is an alien invasion type deal ala Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Thing.

Doing some research on the genre and am looking for films in that theme. Already watched SLither and enjoyed it. Any Firefly fans should watch it just to see Nathan Fillion in a good role.

Any suggestions from you guys?

Battlefield Earth is a sci-fi movie that is truly horrific. You mean like that?

Only if I had Scientology money.

Trying to keep this low budget and halfway watchable.

They live. You can probably get RRP to star in your film for 26 bucks

Pretty sure most people dig the first 90% of Sunshine by Danny Boyle. The trailer for Pandorum rocks.

Aliens is my favorite movie of all time. Not like the ones you mentioned, but it's Sci-Fi/Horror.

Yes. Watch the 1958 classic "Curse of the Demon" with Dana Andrews, scared the crap out of me as a kid.
It were to be remade today, with the current special effects technology and wizardry - OMG.

If you don't mind cheating, I wrote a short sci-fi film that takes place on the ISS and is set in the latter days of 2012. It follows a scientist on the ISS that is hired by the US government when they realize stars are disappearing and the universe is imploding. It's thematic, and is really about death and accepting it.

Really? I thought it was pretty awful.

Would zombies qualify as sci-fi/horror? You could go that route as well.

A pretty decent sci-fi horror movie would be Even Horizon.

No aliens though, so that might not help.

Mars Attacks?

The portal could go to an alien world instead of hell though.

I enjoyed the campiness of it. And the one liners were pretty spot on.

"If I weren't about to shite my pants, I'd be fricking fascinated right now."

All the old school ones I will definitely watch.
